Austin Morris Princess HL makes for depressing reading, even taking the vagaries of the numbers into account.

2,240 in Q4 of 1994

34 in Q4 of 2011 (22 of which are on SORN, of which mine wasn't one at that time)

It's incredible how many cars that were taken for granted, as common as lamp posts, that have all but died out.

I know three people, and between them there are about 10 Activa Turbos. A few of them work, too.

My one works very well. But for how long?

I've been thinking about getting a spare one just in case. Like your wise friends have done already

As was mentioned earlier this week in another thread, the problem with HML is basically that old paper records were put onto computer in the 1990s-2000s by a lot of people with no knowledge of cars. There were loads of government data entry jobs in this period as all types of databases switched from paper to computer.

For example, you will probably find Allegro under Rover, Austin, Morris, Austin-Morris, Austin-Rover and Leyland. Especially confusing with BL-ARG cars due to their re-badging and re-branding.

So basically, don't trust it too much!

As above. When I had my Mk3 Cortina it said there was only one left from that year, which was complete bollocks. I'm starting to wonder if these lists are compiled by the Parker's guide fantasy writers.

Well my Safrane V6 RXE has dropped from 12 to only 9 taxed.

I know of 3 of these cars, just 6 to find...

Makes my chances of finding a taxed example to buy very slim indeed.

Regarding data, there's also a shitload of MOT data up for grabs if you have a computer capable of opening a 700mb excel file without doing an impression of Onslow's Cortina.

It's anonymised but each vehicle has a unique ID, so you can still e-stalk the rarer stuff.

I would like to know how many 1973 cars there are with a tax disc. From this I could calculate the revenue lost if they were to restart the rolling historic exemption, not at 25 years but from where is is now which I suppose would make it a 40 year rolling exemption.

Is that data easily available?

I tried that but they said that it would cost more than £600 to collect the information so they wouldn't do it unless I paid

I seem to recall on the Aggro front I think it was, that Van Den Plas don't or certainly didn't exist as a manufacturer on the MOT database.

And don't start me on all Vespa being Vespa Douglas according to the Dooooovlala :?

Vespa/Douglas thing was (is) a right caper. I had a TX200 that was down as a Douglas with a 197cc. Insurance was a nightmare at first, in the end the people I went with just said 'tell us it's a P200E and that'll do'.

For Princesses you want to check 'Leyland' as a manufacturer as well, from late 75 (after the really early Austin/Morris/Wolseley ones) they were officially the Leyland Princess until about 79 (poss. when the '2' came out). I've also seen them with V5s where 'BL Cars' is the manufacturer. The Mini was also known as a 'Leyland Mini' at about this time as well, and was listed as such in price guides.

This madness was due to a government sponsored think tank report into the future of BL produced in 1975, known as the Ryder Report after the head of the committee. One of the recommendations was that individual marques should be dropped and all cars known as 'Leylands'.

Who was Douglas then, the UK importers?

Supposedly, yes. I have to say lots of 'suspicious' looking so called imports were registered as Douglas, apparently due to the DVLA being too thick/lazy to investigate properly.

I say 'so called' because there seems to be an almost infinite amount of old scooters (mostly Lambrettas) that are imports and 'just need registering'. This despite the fact some owners have gone to incredible lengths to restore them in Britain then flog them off. I'd be willing to bet a fair amount are stolen as it'd be piss easy to just say they're imported as no i.d would really be checkable by a buyer.
