Remote central locking - retrofit

The driver's door lock doesn't work on the BX. I could get the barrel replaced, but that's a pain as it'll take my key tally up to three.

 

So, I was contemplating fitting one of those after-market remote control unit things. Anyone on here done this? To be honest, remote central locking is one thing I do like on modern cars, especially as the BX has no external lock on the boot. It'd make life a lot easier if I could just plip as I approach.

 

That said, the central locking has stopped working at all, so I probably need to sort that out first...

I solved the problem of no central locking by giving Mrs D her own key so she can do her side. :D

We use a similar technique with the 2CV, where I throw the keys across the roof so my wife can unlock her door...

 

However, the BX tailgate has no external lock, and that's when I really tend to wish I had remote central locking!

I fitted a kit purchased from e-bay to the Sierra. That was over two years ago and the only problem that I've had with it is that one of the remotes packed up, not a problem as the kit came with two remotes. The wiring took a bit of figuring out, but I got there in the end.

I've fitted a couple of kits of late, sourced on Amazon, looked a bit cheapy Chinese but work brilliantly, silent, strong and a very good range from the fobs, these kits have really improved and work better than a lot of oe stuff.

http://www.Rclick.co.uk is the place to go. I must have fitted 20 of their kits, never had a fault with them. The fobs aren't amazing, but they are the best of a bad bunch.

 

You can get kits from them or off ebay to just control your existing central locking (bear in mind there might not be a motor in the drivers door) or full kits including 4 motors for cars without OE C/L.

 

The kits must smell or something, cos they always come either with a free air freshener (already opened) or with the boxes lathered in Lynx Africa.

The central locking did work on all doors, but there are some wiring issues to sort out. The driver's door doesn't unlock on the central locking which is a bit of a pain! Given how cheap these systems seem, it's probably worth it I reckon. Thanks for the input chaps.

These aftermarket jobbies all look a bit hit and miss to me. I keep meaning to fit something to the Volvo but I couldn't do with skanky keyfobs that fall to bits or feel really cheap.

Fix the factory central locking and wire the factory drivers door solenoid to a remote locking kit.

 

That way you've already got the wiring and solenoids in place for each door. Saves rewiring everything and isn't rocket science.

If anyone has a Fiat with key central locking, pop down to your local scrappies, and pick up the relay and keyfob from a scrap car with remote locking and plug in the new relay in place of your original central locking relay. Now you have remote locking :D

 

works with Seicento, Punto Mk1 and probably more...

Humm, this sounds daft but could that work with any car with central locking controlled by a relay?

Retrofit the setup from a Mk2 BX 16V/TZD? or a CX?

 

Might be worth talking to Rob Moss. He's equipped one of his GSAs with plip central locking. With a "pip" sound and flashing indicators an' everything...

I don't really want the actual Citroen locking. It's rubbish. Too much like the set-up like my old 306, in which you almost had to hold the button against the windscreen. I'd rather have one I could operate from some distance away. Fussy, I know!

I can't find any of those fancy fiat central locking relays for sale online...... May check the local scrappies tomorrrow. I'm sure that it could be adapted to fit anything with a bit of crimping and connector action. Maybe.

Used to be able to get kits from Maplins. Piece of piss to fit, but as the solenoids are already there I'd be using the Citroen ones.

I agree with Pete, whilst the infra red remote is pish on the Citroën mechanism the Citroën solenoids are the most powerful and robust design I've ever come across. I've never known of a BX locking mechanism to fail. I've lost count of the funny bone bruises I've had from the lock button ramming into my elbow if the system is opened whilst resting my arm on the top of the door
