Hi guys. I hope everyone is fine and dandy. Ok my problem is with my 2002 51k M.G. When its cold it sounds rather rough and a bit tappety. Nothing to bad but its there. When it gets warm its fine just a bit tappety on tickover. My pal who's on his third M.G says its normal on a K series. Is he right? Thanks guys.

When did it last have an oil and filter change?

Not unusual to have some tappety for the first few seconds when cold, but it should die down. What oil has it got in it and how old is it?

Around 12 months/7000 miles ago. I know its due.lol. The tappet noise dissapears as soon as i thouch the throttle. I hope this helps.

Does the noise go away when you depress the clutch pedal? Just a thought.

I'd have a check of the oil level if you haven't recently...

Ive checked the oil only today an it was just below the maximum line. I'm not sure of what oil is in as i did not do the change. I will try the clutch in the morning...........i know it sounds daft but i havent took any notice of that bud.lol.

BLMC-Rover cars - checking the oil is a Sunday Morning job (along with greasing the nipples)

Which engine is it,mine's got the VVC & sounds like that all the time.It has done 160,000 though :o

They all do that, Sir. It's poor oil circulation to cylinder 4, and the slightly ovoid nature of the K4s pistons (designed that way). Halfords 10/40 part synth oil is ideal for these engines. Use a good flush like Forte first, and don't use a cheap shit oil filter. A good flush and change should lessen the noise, but it isn't anything to worry about.

I checked the clutch this morning and it made no differance to the noise. Sounds like a good oil and filter change is on the cards then.lol. Thanks guys.
