Chassis number

I need to get hold of a chassis number of a car i need to look some parts up for.

How can i get that just with the reg?

The owner is miles from the car and doesn,t have any docs with him,and it was an import when new,so our system at work won,t pick up with it?

Any idea(without paying for it)as i want to get on with ordering the parts for it.

To be honest, most places these days seem to be able to cope with just a reg number. Last few times I've tried main dealers or motor factors, a reg number has sufficed.

Could be worse - we've got an ex Stagecoach Kenya Dennis Dragon triaxle at work, and Alexander Dennis themselves swore that the bus itself, and indeed the chassis number, didn't exist. We had no luck sourcing belts for it's Cummins engine on an engine number either, and eventually got measurements off the very chewed belt we required and got one from Volvo for an FL6 truck.
