sorry about posting this here - am under a bit of time pressure to sort this. I'm collecting the 820 on Wednesday and need to sort insurance - the mainstream companies are costly - £752 is the lowest I can get -

a/ as a 1996 car is there any company you know of who could offer classic insurance?

b/ any other ideas?

cheers

have you tried 1st central insurance?

i find the are quite cheap... usually around the 300-400 mark

I've been insuring most of my cars through Footman James (http://www.footmanjames.co.uk) on a multicar policy for the last few years.

They also do single-car classic policies... less than £400 (fully comp, unlimited miles, free UK & Euro breakdown, use of other cars) on the Maserati when other insurers wanted £1800+...!

They define Land Rovers that are 15 years old or older as classics, should be the same with other Rover products.

There's a reason for that... have a google on the complaints

I am with Richardsen Hosken, a broker, who use identical policies from Equity Red Star as per Footman James, etc. But, being a small broker means they are more approachable. I added my 1996 Alfa 155 on the Classic multicar and it was £180 pa full comp 'classic' on the drive. Anything prior to 1986 on that policy is £85.

But if you're wanting to use your Rover as daily, beyond 3k a year, it's going to be double at least

Footman James use Royal Sun Alliance as the insurer for their classic policies... no complaints from me on their prices or flexibility, e.g. now that my Disco 300 TDi is 15 years old it will cost me just £40.14 to add it to my classic multicar policy (fully comp, unlimited miles, windscreen cover, breakdown cover, etc...)

You mean 'also use', surely, as FJ are a broker? Many FJ customers over the years have had ERS policies. Maybe FJ have dropped ERS recently then.

Hmmmmmm

FJ won't cover me due to lack of garage. I'm going to try peter James..they cover the BX but are not so hot on cars any newer.

I wonder if you 'forgot' to tell them that you don't have a garage, would it cause problems in case of a claim where it wouldn't have mattered (i.e. in the case of you driving into the back of another car)? It's not like you'd bother making a theft claim for that sort of car... (cue everyone swearing at me about how unscrupulous I am and how I increase their premia and kill kittens)

Shit, 97324973 edits...my grammar and syntax are awful tonight...And I haven't started drinking yet!

A/ ive never been able to get a classic policy on owt that new but you never know.

B/ change your postcode

I dont pay that for much for one modern one 4x4 one classic and a bike all fully comp has to be down to the postcode.

When I was insured with them last year if the car were parked outside between the hours of 1am and 6am (IIRC), within 1 mile of either home address or garage address, any loss from theft wasn't covered.

My cars have never been worth a great deal so it wasn't always garaged.

I have never had a problem with them

...won't cover me due to lack of garage. ..

I have a single garage & a drive & four cars.

All are insured as being on the drive or in the garage depending on the order they come home.

This may or may not help.

LV, Direct Line, More than & RAC/AA (because you get some kind of discount through the one you have your breakdown cover with) all reasonable in the recent past.

On a slight tangent anyone else use RAC/AA card for 20% discount at Motorway services?

I eventually went with Performance Direct who came in at an annual of £388 which I thought was remarkably good considering my city centre post code (obviously surrounded by car ringers and crack houses) and under half of what the competition were charging

FYI Performance Direct do a 'Modern Classic' policy that certainly covers this (1997) car - looks quite suitable for covering 90's chod - ie relevant for us!

Quick update on this: after reading scoot's success story, just out of curiosity, I spoke with Performance Direct who couldn't find me any limited mileage policy for the Scorpio, which is also a 1997. They quoted me 4 grand.

And you didn't threaten to sue them? Dammit man, you're slipping. :P

No, I was too busy laughing my arse off. But I should keep it in mind for next time around!
