Recommended Posts

I have been feeling Omega love for a wee while now. Is there anyone out there who knows of a very cheap one for sale? I dont mind faults and or needing work. All i am bothered about is it must be a auto. Its going to be a keeper so i'm not just looking to make a buck.lol. I live in Edinburgh but my pal has a recovery truck i can use so distance is not really an issue. Thanks in advance guys.

I'll keep an eye out Charlie, have you tried the Vauxhall forums?

Omegas are alright. Whoever it is that ruins all the FWD Vauxhalls was on holiday when these were designed.

I suspect they came back just in time to design the exhaust manifolds.

*Edit. If it stays near this price it's a potential bargain even though it has no MOT. These Elite ones are meag fan to drive.

With the utterly hopeless:

'will tow absolutly anything. tow bar not fitted, but can get one for for you'

Cheers Cavette. I have looked on the Omega Owners Club but there wasnt much. They seem to like the ex-plod stuff which is cool but as we well know most of those are manual. I need a auto as im diabetic which affects my legs or it wouldnt be a issue. Do you know of any other forums i can check?

Ebay used to have a good selection - I hankered after one myself after having a couple of senators, put off by tales of unreliability.

Okay okay maybe that was a little facetious so here's some proper advice;

Front compliance bushes fail, cheap replacements in like 6 months

Steering idler arms fail

There's about a half dozen balljoints in the steering linkages

Front tie rods seize

Rear tie rods seize and I mean really seize and they're ~£80 each side from GM

Rear cross member bushes fail

Rear coil springs snap

Extreme Inner tyre wear on the front isn't unusual. Camber can be adjusted. despite what GM say to eliminate the problem.

So basically any odd tyre wear or steering/handling issues can be fixed but can get expensive.

Or maybe I should insist he just buy one so he can post up an interesting story 'n' stuff

Yay. That's well better than any Vectra.

Oh, you forgot "The exhaust manifolds are made from Brie"

Ecotech exhaust manifolds always sound shit from cold, like they're blowing like hell and about to give up but then once warmed up they seem to be ok. The 2.0 litre surprisingly pulls very nicely despite the huge barge-ness of these things.

Posted

doesn't sound too bad to me, and I always thought that the estates look pretty useful and even a bit upmarket

I drove one years ago when they were nearly new and thought it was quite nice

I even wondered if you can drop some GM V8 in there for Pete

If you have the spanners, of course you can! :D Anything can be made to fit, by a sufficiently skilled engineer.

Posted

They are really cheap second hand (as a rule) because they're not univerally popular and some people are scared of 'big' cars.

Posted

2.0 Ecotec exhaust manifolds occasionally crack.

Also, the plastic cam covers on early V6 engines can bow due to overtightening & drip oil onto the exhaust manifolds. Smelly, but not the end of the world.

Same floorpan and so on as various Holdens and Pontiacs, so it shouldn't be hard.

Heh, you can do fun things to Carltons. I never even dreamed this was possible.

Omega = The end. Dreadful wallowy slugs. Rot for fun, if one bit of the exhaust goes fubar, you generally need to replace the lot. I wouldn't use one as a stepping stone in a crocodile infested swamp. The sunroof would probably decide to open for once if I did......

I like em. They are quite rot-prone I think, but then again the old Carltons and Senators could give a BMC 1100 a good fight in a 'rust-off' competition.

I bet that's a right laugh, those the wheels look complete gash.

Instructions for Pete:-

Look for a V6 Omega estate with or without blown engine/gearbox.

Look for a rusty/crashed Holden Commodore.

swap oily bits/electronics

restore the power from the Holden detuned 300bhp back up to the US spec 350bhp

fit towbar

actually, a crashed Vauxhall Monaro might be near enough as wasn't the Monaro basically an Omega coupe?
