My new Volvo

My Volvo garage - owning friend has just taken delivery of a 750k miler 'V' reg 244 DL, which did 600k on the original engine. It has a bit of grot here and there, and the box & prop feel a bit worn, but drives OK and still has MOT. The owner has now got a brand new XC90!

Christ! Talk about getting your money's worth - although the owner should have at least tried to get 600k out of the replacement lump, Irv Gordon style.

Get a load of this bad mutha, Picked it up this week.

Its done 195k, but runs beautifully. The bodywork seems to be 100% original with no dings or crummy repairs, and the interior is GR8. Cant fault it really, loads of MOT and even got 4 months tax.

Its a 2.0 injected 5-speed, which is exactly the one I wanted, for 'economy' reasons. It drives great, just kind of rolls along in an 'unstoppable' type of motion. I love it! I have even got 32.8 mpg out of it over 250 miles by judicious use of 'Rollin Hirst-stylz' drivin' techniques. I believe these have an LSD so I will of course b takin it 2 drift events innit.

Only cloud on the horizon is that the clutch is a bit tired I think, it doesnt slip but only the tiniest press on the pedal causes it to disengage and engagin 1st from a standstill is not easy. I dont think that should be too painful to sort though. Already got a towbar to go on, then its gonna be A FRAME MANIA all over again!

Great buy. I really love the retro feel of the interior. Those seats look bizare and as if my nana knitted the covers for them, from memory they are the OE ones aren't they?

I get confused. This is the 'top spec' one, yet it has a plain tweedy cloth (which looks identical to that in the FSO Polonez my father had), yet lesser models (like my "SE") had lovely deep velour corduroy effect seats. Odd.

I dont think Torslanders are top spec, more a weird parts bin run out, hence the manual windows and lack of hide.

From Wikipedia , 240 Torslanda (1993): Very few of this special model were made. They were made primarily for use in Sweden, as they were specially equipped for surviving snow and ice in freezing winters. These cars can be identified by Torslanda badging, tinted windows, plastic exterior trim (as opposed to chrome, which will rust in snowy conditions), multi-spoke 15" alloy wheels, and full-length body striping above the rocker panels. The interior featured only the bare minimum of extras with no electric mirrors, windows, cruise control, air conditioning nor leather upholstery. Because the freezing temperatures could cause luxurious accessories to break down more often than usual, the only features were heated front seats, power steering and the standard heating systems.

So GR8 for driving to the South Pole 8)

Great purchase MC - those old diesel Volvos with the VW LT engine are superb. I had a 940 estate last year - had done 230K but ran perfect, pulled like a train and got me to the south of France and back without missing a beat. And sold on eBay upon my return for exactly double what I'd paid for it. :D And like you say, they make a great noise for a diesel. The higher inertia of the diesel engine makes shifting in and out of overdrive a bit clonky though - use of clutch definitely required.

Top motah!Whenever I look on ebay or the owners forum for Volvos they've all done 130,000+ miles. Is there no such thing as a low mileage Volvo, or are they just difficult to clock? What age do they die? Has one ever died? I like the 940 and 850 bestest, but your silver one is rather swish 8)

wuvz, are the manuals 4 speed + OD efforts? What's the fuel economy and cruising speed like? Will be running it on the £1.30/litre stuff before I convert it to run on waste veg oil.

I think a lot of them were 4+OD, yes. I still haven't quite worked out the logic behind what gearboxes were fitted to '80s Volvos - or indeed if there was any logic behind it. Fuel economy isn't bad for a big car - cruising at a gentle 65-70 I got over 40mpg on the run down through France. They will cruise happily enough at anything up to 90, although obviously the fuel economy suffers when you gun it. Top speed seems to be in the low 100s. They are apparently one of the easiest engines to convert to veg - I'm pretty sure Top Gear used a 760TD when they did their first feature on veg oil years ago, and if memory serves they just poured neat veg oil in the tank and away it went. Brilliant old engines. In fact, according to the handbook that came with my old LT35D, they will run on up to a 2/3-1/3 diesel-petrol mix. Try that with a modern common rail lump...
