Shite to avoid at all cost

Recommended Posts

Seems to me theres a huge amount of very knowledgable people on here with experience of all sorts of rotten unreliable crap, perhaps a complete list of shite to avoid at all costs unless its free ( send straight over the bridge for profit ) .

Mine would be the 3 cylinder Corsa which seems to have H/G , electrical issues by the ton and seems to die around 80,000 miles whatever you try and do .

AX and a few 106 diesels with the chocolate 1.4 engine. Later 1.5 much tougher.

MB 190D 2 litre 4 cylinder, slower than a 2CV4 towing a caravan over the M62.

Daewoo Matiz. Good for nothing piece of shite.

Strangely, what I'd considered one of the nastiest pieces of shite existed turned out to be one of the best cars I've ever driven - a low mileage Alfa Arna, it handled as well as any Sud - even though its rear suspension was Nissan. (Front end all Alfa.)

Can think of a few others but would prob offend too many others.

This car hasn't made it into production but the manufacturer's website asks for suggestions as to how to improve it. At least they're listening. And the single wheel's at the back.

Nothing. I love buying 'avoid at all costs' stuff. I seem to have survived a K-Series Rover 400, a VM-engined Range Rover, a ropey Citroen CX and an Alfa Romeo 164 V6 with no serious issues.

At Autoshite level, I'd give anything a fair crack of the whip, even a DAEWOO. Apart from the BMW 0.5 Series/BINI, which will remain my nemesis for all time :)

Yes, but most of that is quality stuff...

+1 on the Corsa, mine had weird electrical glitches, a mysterious intermittent misfire and the timing chain rattled like hell. It was only 10 years old with known history and had done about 50,000 miles when we sold it - very disappointing. Oh, and the oil pressure switch sprung a leak three times too!

Oil pressure switches are GR9 fun when they go, unless you own the car. Seems to me that the cam chain problem appears to effect low mileage Corsas and ones that are used for short runs.

Daewoo Matiz? Owned one years ago. Absolutely loved it. Great cars in three-pot form.

I'm like Pete really. Love the unloved. Sadly, the 2CV has much more of a following these days than it did when I first owned one. Then it was an utter joke of a car to most people. I'd still like a Skoda Estelle - another joke car.

Chrysler Neon, especially automatics, never heard a good word about them.

That is just sublime, I don't care if you have to pedal it, if I had kids I would pimp them for that.

This thread is already looking like a wish list, keep it up.

personnally (and this is subjective, I know) I would avoid all Vauxhall built after 1973 as they are simply dull.

any ford fiesta apart from mk 1s

diesel non-turbo discovery's, utterly potless

i also love the unloved, though i also love a quiet life, so tend to buy german shite as dailies

Diesel non-turbo Discos? They've never existed. They've always had turbos. Speaking of Discos though, I'd quite like to try an Mpi just to see how miserable they are. More power than a Tdi, but about as much torque as a bicycle.

Worst car I've ever owned. Never again

My nomination would be the Renault Laguna II with the dCi engines, particularly the 2.2 dCi. Unbelievable shit in every way, not even nice when they work and aren't pissing oil or eating their own turbo, which isn't very often.

In constrast, the same car with the 3.0 V6 Petrol is one of my favourite cars EVA.

Personally I think it is awful, I only posted it coz I knew someone would fall for it and overlook the perfection of the 3-wheeler.

that thing looks like the bastard child of a Daewoo Matiz and the Outspan orange car. I can't decide if its awful or brilliant.

If you owned the car/shoe above then this dog would at least look in keeping..

really? I didn't know that. A mate had a non-turbo diesel when I was posted to the fatherland in '93ish, it was a LHD on bosche plates, fwiw. did the bosche get a differant spec or something? was as slow as death anyhow

Even with the turbo, it's only 111bhp, which isn't a massive amount to move something that big.

That yellow shoe thing is ace. Not sure even I would want to own one though...

I "discovered" one of these lying up and decaying. A friend of mine did some digging and has since taken it under his wing and has it in concourse condition.

^ What a winner! I'd love a MK1 XM, they look like pointy spaceships. I'd also roll that wee Tang Hua Chika thing, as it looks like fun, in a fairly cheery, but actually quite miserable very small car way.

In fact, there's not much I wouldn't have. Don't buy Volvos from the bottom of fields, or dodgy Rovers from dealers in Chapelhall and you can't really go wrong...

Just don't buy a Hyundai Accent "Coupe" as they are positively hateful things. Reliable, but I'd rather pogo to St. Tropez than take one of them to the shops.

I rather like that Tang Hua thing as well.

Personally I'd say any Mk2 Laguna. Unnecessarily complicated electronics put together by Frenchmen is not a recipe for reliability. The petrol engines may not self-destruct in the way that the diesels do, but I'd still think long and hard before buying another.

Reliant Regal. Sorry.

Iveco Daily 35-8. Adds slowness and stupidly low gearing to the usual catalogue of Iveco drawbacks (crap build quality, rust, horrible gearbox etc). At least it's mechanically reliable though.

Any automatic Renault. I've experienced a fair few, from a 1964 R8 to a 2003 Clio, and none have been any good.

That's the fun of it! Who knows what'll happen next! Great motoring!

I've had no trouble with auto boxes apart from my old Clio which slips in first and second. But yes, Renault's crap auto boxes are responsible for culling the population of old 25s and the likes.

1990's (and onwards) Fiats.

Dad had a Ulysse and then a Brava. Both had weird pedals (that hinged at unusable angles) and horrible, open, draughty interiors.

Aye, but see that approach is fair enough with old rammle, but to me a Mk2 Laguna is still a new car, so would be the "modern" in my fleet and therefore expected to be reasonably reliable. I have two ancient Citroëns and a Reliant Scimitar to provide all the "what'll it do next" thrills I need. :D

Fiat Bravas were always simply horrid whenever I drove one, worse than a Pug 307 estate. The Sierra 1.3 was utter wonk, had to drive a few in an old job! Not as pleasant as a Fiat 126 even.

Agree with the anything post-2001 comment. Also anything with a dual mass flywheel.

Except the mk.1 base, as owning one would result in you winning Autoshite
