A 1990 (H) Ford Orion 1.4 LX in Red.

I read a newspaper article sometime in the mid 1990s that the most stolen cars in the UK were small saloons - the Ford Orion and Vauxhall Belmont in particular.

I picked up this Orion yesterday after speaking to a fella I know last week who works in the yard where it was. He told me that the car was in pretty good condition apart from a little bit of bodywork (drivers side rear arch and small rust hole in door), and the back bumper and front number plate are cracked. They had sold it on ebay but forgot to tell the buyer that they didnt have the logbook, so the buyer travelled up and pulled out due to this, not very happy too as you would imagine!

It was initially scrapped because the owner has now decided it was 'too old now' and didnt think anyone else would want it.

No tax obviously and it has a very short MOT (up tomorrow actually!).It had been standing a couple of months so took a bit of work to get it going but once it started it was fine. engine has covered 80k, car is solid apart from the arch and door issue and it runs really well. Well happy with it. Its the 2nd Orion I have owned, had a 1.3 poverty spec one a few years ago that I got for free and sold on for 80 quid! :) Its fair to say that is one is a far better motor than that one! This one has got all the electrics as well. (passenger side window doesnt work though!)

Also in the yard is a pretty smart Red 5 door Peugeot 309 automatic on a G plate (complete car). Its also for sale if anyone is interested then let me know and ill give you the details for the place and you can get in touch. (pics below - please disragard the blotches on it from my camera, as usual.) Dont know what they want for it, but I dont think it will be expensive.

Nice one. Pretty sure I've seen this one on Ebay?

Orion was on last month. Ill just check to see if the 309 is now.

A good save, its suprising how little interest there is in Orions at the moment (probably when survivors are down to double figures they will be worth crazy money). They were very popular with boy racer types in the mid to late 90's. Good to hear the scrap yard were smart enough to give it (and the 309) a second chance.

Aye. T'was the Orion I was referring to (which I cleverly concealed by not mentioning which car I was on about). I was quite tempted by it but had typical no funds. Was up for £450 IIRC.

I remember that Orion being on there as well, It was for sale the same time as the 40k Orion 1.6 GL that i was eyeing up was for sale.

That looks very nice though, and it has the electric kit which is a nice bonus as well, The 1.4 CVH isn't a bad engine ether, better then most of people give it credit for, and it's in the cheap tax band.

It was, I didnt pay that for it though. ;)

Ive told the lad to let me know of anything like the Orion or Pug or anything else a bit unusual that comes in from now on. so watch this space - hopefully it can be a good source of shite for members of this site.

Yeah mate, should have said, no big secret!. its Autosalvage in Morda near Oswestry.

Theyve not got many cars in at all at the moment, seem to have had a massive clearout. Worth keeping an eye out what comes in though - especially as they sell complete cars from there.

This might be slightly worrying, hopefully the old boy hasn't sent the V5 off to doovla and it's just been misplaced.

Spoke to another lad in the yard just now and they only had the current MOT with the car, no other paperwork apparantly.

Im filling in a form to request a new V5 as we speak.

Bloody hell, are they still going? It used to be ram full of crud about 10 years ago, Montegos and all kinds. The boxes in 309 autos would probably make Renault shudder, we had one out of the auctions years back and when the box went a week later most scrappies just laughed when we ran round to get a replacement!

Have you tried Welsh Border Motor Spares in Welshpool by the way mate? The owner (Kev,iirc) always had loads of Autoshite material lined up for sale outside and his prices for parts and cars were always really good.

Might have some pics of some of the shite from Autosalvage that has been there over the past couple of years. ill have a look and post it here if I can find.

It was a 309 like that, which left me with a cheque for under £10 after fee's in chelmsford car auctions.
