Scrapyard Spot: Mercedes V8

My local scrapyard can often be an interesting place to visit, especially with the occasional executive, obscure vehicle or classic that rolls in. I have even been cheeky enough to drag a battery over to a 5 cylinder Audi Coupe and start her up.

This one stumped me, it falls under executive, obscure AND classic by the looks of it. All I know is that its a Merc, left hand drive, V8 with electronic fuel injection and it was an Auto.

I was in a rush today, and only had time for these quick snaps (was after steel rims for winter tyres for the mothers Pug 406)

Can anyone tell me more about it?

It looks like one of these :-)

I presume they are quite rare?

That would be a 280SE3.5, I think, about 1970. Must be worth saving, surely, with the worldwide lust for anything wearing that star?

It's an S Class W108 series about 1971-3. The lights would make it a US spec model and therefore a 280SE(L?) 4.5 so it would be extremely rare 8)

Get th'engina oot, and goerbucks two. Then slap the lot in a post 2001 merc V8, but pay no attention to the MOT man due to the engine age!

It looked as thought it had already been abandoned for a good few years before being bridge(s)'d and looked pretty rotten, but otherwise quite straight and mostly complete.

Certainly didn't look like an english spec but had no idea it could be a US spec.

The image i found on google seemed to reckon it was a 6.3? No idea if this is correct or not. One of the more interesting finds, might go back and have a better look around next weekend.

A bloke who lives close to my folks, and Andrew E, has got a whole farmyard full of these just rotting away. He's known as Mercedes Bill, unsurprisingly. His front drive and garden is also full of more recent Mercshite just returning to nature too.

There was a big fire in one of the workshops on the farm a while back and as far as i know a lot of the old rammel was damaged and still just sits there rotting and burnt.

Yes, a US spec 4.5 and a fairly late one too. They're beautiful cars in good condition but though they're sought after now, no one wanted them for a long time and they used to be cheap. One of my uncles had one thirty years ago, I loved that car.
