1. Forgot to elaborate on the semi famous comment. Magazine car. Also if you read my post on Tapatalk you will see the ML55 picture instead of text. Lol.
2. My list, nearly all bought and Sold: 1st: Lexus Ls430, semi famous, bought to replace an Audi A6 as I decided I like petrol over diesel too much (realised the A6 was actually a really good car and tried to buy it back) . Very kitted out and nice to drive but had a few too many things that needed doing since it was on over 200k miles. I replaced cam covers, O2 sensors, fabbed up an exhaust section and started to give up as it wasn't all that pretty. Bought £1,800 Spent £700 ish Sold £2,400 2nd car: after the Lexus I needed a stop gap car before I went to the Philippines. Skoda Fabia cropped up on the forum for £600 and I decided to snap it up. Perfectly average motoring. Fixed some wiring on the alternator, fitted a used driver's seatbelt, fixed a monumental leak on the rear doors and gave it a clean and happy days. Sold for £800. 3rd car: Jaguar XJ8. probably the nicest car I bought all year and it was broken to give you an idea of the kind of cars I buy. Jaguar XJ8 3.6. lovely thing though a little underpowered compared to the 4.2's. fitted a used strut in my shed and rebuilt the compressor, fitted a new drivers door lock so you could actually get out and it was golden. I didn't like the underpoweredness (see later in the thread for remedy) so decided to sell it and my dad wanted one so I sold it to him as it is a really nice one. 4th: ML55 AMG. as you will see in the picture above a fantastic ML55. Bought on the forum for moving rubbish to the tip (was initially going for an old Volvo but this was even better). Filled the boot with a huge amount of tat, got me to London and back twice, averaged mid teens to the gallon and went like stink. Really great car and would be tempted to get one again. Bought for £2,250, Sold for £3,800 and spent £50 on a regas. The profit almost paid for the 2 months fuel bill (I jest) 5th: BMW Z4. Bought this as a mini project to fix up and flip. How wrong I was. 2003 on 70k miles owned by an elderly lady. Jesus it was shit. Replaced all the front suspension and it all snapped on me. Replaced all brakes discs and pads, replaced cam cover gasket, drivers cupholder, 2 tyres, alternator, front bumper, refurbed hood motor, new badges all round and I feel there's more I missed but I can't be bothered thinking about it anymore. Bought for £1,500 ended up spending over £1,000 on it and sold it for £2,800. Really disappointed in the sale price but by the time I sold it summer had long gone and the market was getting shit. Hate BMWs. Looks cool though. 6th: Audi A6. C5 generation and another stop gap car after I sold the other stuff. 1.8t, nice car but it was very rough. Bought for £560, fixed a few bits and sold for £600. 7th: Jaguar XJR. Bought a very ropey XJR for £2,700. Replaced a good few bits, drivers window regulator, windscreen wiper mechanism, passenger front strut, full service and theres more to do. Need to replace the supercharger belt and idler pulley, fix the alarm system as theres something interfering with the key fob working and then need to address the bodywork as it's a little shoddy. Very quick and lovely car to drive though! Still own and plan on owning for a while. 8th: Range Rover as mentioned above by Saabnut . Final purchase of the year and it's a biggen! 4.4 V8 of jaguar engine and 2.7tonnes of land rover. Super lovely car and super long journey to get it but all seems worth it. Only had it a couple of days so I need to get to know it but from what I can see so far it's a keeper. honourable mention for my Volvo S60 which my girlfriend drives. Bought in mid 2022 but has been very reliable. Bought with the typical d5 core plug leak and got that fixed and it's been solid ever since bar a couple of fixing an abs ring steaming from disturbing the axles when removing the gearbox. for 2024 I feel like it may be a slow year for car purchases unless they're for selling on.
3. That looks epic! Can't believe it's that rot free, of it turned over so easily as well are we sure this isn't just a locked up starter? ~My stab in the dark on the weird things, not some early injector thing is it? If it's a carbed system then obviously not but I know some manufacturers had some interesting versions during the take over of injection systems.~ Scratch my stab, didn't inspect the picture enough, thought that was brass pipes going to it like it was carrying a fluid!
4. And we're home. Weather here in sunny stockport is gash. But to round up the car, got here faultless and the MPG figures are in and I've figured out the eco mode. The gearbox very regularly changes down for hills etc which I suspect is very kind on the engine but not so kind on the MPG. The picture below shows the economy when I held the car manually in 6th for the last 50 miles going up and down the Shap (m62). The 20mpg is from saabnuts drive to my house. I filled it up near Dundee, I've done 360 miles and it's got a quarter of a tank left. Realistically that's not bad for a 3 ton v8 in a rush. Until the last 50 miles I was making progress mainly on back roads as I went via Durham. The car handled it great. Very happy with it and makes the 3 day excursion worth it. 8th and last car purchase of 2023, I think this will be sticking around for a good while! Thanks for tagging along everyone!
5. Day 73. Final day of this trip. Only 2.5 hours left to go so will be a short trip. May get it cleaned and valeted though today so I'll post pictures of it looking it's opulent best! Also I need a name. I was thinking maybe Roger. Ideas on a postcard please.
6. Pleasure to meet you too. Real stand up gent with a fantastic collection of fine cars. I suspect I will have to buy something off you again at some point to have another chat with you and give the range rover a real exercise!
7. Not more than it already was! It's in fine fettle other than reversing camera needs sorting, cigarette lighter/charging port needs sorting, needs some discs and pads, service plus a ball joint. Other than this I think it should be good to do some work but I haven't looked underneath it yet... The jaguar drive line however I believe is a very strong one. I've had several of these engines, they don't leak, they don't break, they give decent economy (when in an x350) so my optimism is very high. I'm sure land rover can put that right.
8. Just got to the hotel in Durham now. 5am start. Two shiters met. One range rover bought. One leg unraised. One tired boi. The journey continues tomorrow!
9. Right. I'm in Edinburgh getting some food. RR looking good and averaging basically no MPG. Love it.
10. Just seen the rest of Dundee. Nevermind.
11. Expected to be greeted with the RR at 11.20. this is 20 hours behind schedule and we will be half way there. Stopping in Durham on the way back.
12. I had my preconceived notion of Dundee. So far I've seen a lovely harbour, some nice buildings, a few private jets and the coffee shop is okay. I've not been stabbed yet but 40 minutes for that to change.
13. Landed in Dundee. 50 minute wait for the next bus so I'm taking refuge in this here coffee shop. Seems alright Dundee.
14. I'll allow it considering you got a pun in there
15. Train from Stirling to Aberdeen is cancelled and none scheduled for today. Anyone in the area willing to do a taxi?
16. Bus and train is booked for tomorrow so fingers crossed we will make it happen!
17. Looking for hotels in Carlisle now. We resume tomorrow
18. Landed in Carlisle. No replacement coaches. Stuck.
19. Line in Carlisle is flooded and train terminates there. Rail replacement coming in... Been made aware that the coaches probably won't be ready for when we get their as well. Sweet jesus
20. We are moving with further delays due to the glorious Scottish weather. It's going to be a long day. I will need all that range rover goodness to keep me going I think.
21. So the update was they hope they'll be moving in a few minutes. HOPE.
22. We've had an announcement. The announcement was that there will be another announcement in 5 minutes with an update?
23. Having checked the trains there is quite a lot going from Edinburgh to Montrose which is where I am headed so if I'm late it's not the end of the world. I do need to get there though which could be tricky... I also need to drive back to Durham where I will be spending the night. Things don't come easy!
24. We have a winner. 4.4 jaguar jobbie. Currently stuck in Lancaster so not confident in getting there but let's see.
