cms206 Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 Morning chaps,The time has come for the gaffer to part with our trusty LDV Convoy minibus. We bought it about four years ago for spares and it turned out to be too good to break, so it's outlasted two much newer ones but he's calling time on it before it becomes a liability. So... '98 R LDV Convoy, 9-seats including the driver, one table, allegedly ex MOD at some point, finished in "Free Candy" two-tone blue. Low roof, short wheelbase, possibly fitted with the desirable* Transit 2.5 diesel (possibly TDi rather than just Di 'cos it does about 80 if you can hold on long enough), some black smoke when really given some beans, 5-speed manual, good tyres with about half a dozen spare wheels and tyres, will probably have spares with it depending on what I can find in the parts store. 140-odd thousand on the clock but that's not it's original binnacle. Everything works but the radio is stuck on Clyde 1. Back doors don't lock. Has most of a floor and isn't catastrophically rotten if someone is reasonably competant with a welder. MOT expired on February 6th but the boss has just given the nod for it's disposal so thought it'd be worth trying on here first. It's located about 30 seconds from Barrhead railway station. Starts with half a turn normally and drives remarkably well for a Sherpa. Offers above scrap value would probably secure but I'll find out what he's actually after. I daresay he'd be willing to deal with Yorkshire better than other places as he's a professional Yorkshireman. Pics to follow. Twiggy 1
Cavcraft Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 I think these are n/a rather than turbo, some Transits with the same engine are considerably quicker than other. If this is a bit over scrap it'll be a bargain as there's a lot to be made out of it with a test and a fairly good sum without one. cms206 1

Yeah, the W-reg this one replaced had the TD in it and this is just as fast; I only know the other one was TD as the turbo blew in spectacular fashion and we just bypassed it and let it run until the floor fell out. Our old P-reg one ran even better than this but the rot killed it eventually, though the older N/P/R-reg Convoys seem a lot less bad than the newer ones.

cms206 Posted February 17, 2015 Author Posted February 17, 2015 Yes posh table and all, Autoshite Coaching holidays to the south of spain here we come Indeed! To be honest I'd give him a couple of hundred quid myself but as I've already got two dead Volvos in the yard adding a Sherpa to it would maybe be pushing my luck a bit. oldcars 1
oldcars Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 I'm liking the two old Plaxton Paramounts too, they must be getting on a bit. Looks like a good yard for a bit of motor spotting

Cavcraft Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 My insurance won't cover this because it's a minibus. It's a shame as I reckon it'd be a piece of cake to knock this on for a few quid. Did you get a rough price off him at all?I know where I'd be advertising this and for how much if it were mine!
Fat_Pirate Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 That looks exactly like the type of minibus to appear in Casualty, probably transporting some troubled teenagers to a Youth club and OH MY GOD! the driver is feeling a bit poorly so has taken a load of Tramadol. alf892, catsinthewelder, HillmanImp and 7 others 10

Will chin him tomorrow as he's only in the depot about three hours a day.
cms206 Posted February 17, 2015 Author Posted February 17, 2015 ADDED BONUS: 8 passenger seats makes this a car, but the taxation class is still bus - FREE BUS LANE USAGE AND £185/YEAR ROAD TACKS
Cavcraft Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 Scrap is awful at the moment, I bet he'd be lucky to see £200 tops for it.
trigger Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 £60 a ton around these parts, He'll be lucky to get £150 for it I'd though.

Aye, we've been stockpiling scrap recently. We cascaded our LDVs in the past (apart from an N-reg hightop 400 16-seater which we scrappaged against a new Merc Vito). The others since then were canabalised to keep the others going then weighed in. He'll probably skip the interior, fill it with scrap and drag the whole thing over the bridge at some point but you never know who needs an untested LDV bus...
Cavcraft Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 I do, but the logistics/associated costs probably deals me out.
cms206 Posted February 17, 2015 Author Posted February 17, 2015 I have conversed with the bossman: SHITER'S PRICE TWO HUNDRED POUNDS (£200!).A whole slightly rotten Sherpa for £200!It'll be on here for a few days then I'll chance Gumtree/eBay or weigh it in and claim this place isn't what it used to be, before jamming a 20p in ALL of your handbrakes. wuvvum Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 Must be one of the first Transit-engined ones. If it'll do 80 it definitely isn't an Indenor though...
holbeck Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 Transit engine in the Convoy started at 97 1/2 MY ( I was involved as a suppliers rep, with the alternator installation).
wuvvum Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 Hmm. My R-plater (so Aug '97 registration at the earliest) had an Indenor lump. Must've sat around for a while before being registered.

I couldn't say about your particular vehicle, but I suppose it would depend on the spec. Production wise, ISTR there was very little overlap.
cms206 Posted April 1, 2015 Author Posted April 1, 2015 Getting uplifted for scrap next Wednesday. THIS PLACE ISN'T WHAT IT USED TO BE ETC.
strangeangel Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 Getting uplifted for scrap next Wednesday. Poor old bugger That's Grade A van shite, that is. If I didn't know for a fact that Our Lass would decapitate me, I would
cms206 Posted April 1, 2015 Author Posted April 1, 2015 Been sitting for weeks again. Turned key and it fired on half a turn as usual, brakes not siezed on, bugger all. It's like shooting a blind, incontinent sheepdog you've had since it was a pup. Scrap are offering £140 collected which seems fair though.
