Scrapping a car using the V5c

Hi all,

Recently broke up a very rotten Volvo 244. The shell has been scrapped but the V5c recently came though and as all real shiters know, the provision for notifying the DVLA of the scrapping a vehicle has been removed from the V5c. When I scrapped a Maestro a year or so ago I sent an accompanying letter explaining that I had cut the shell up and taken it to the metal recyclers, this was accepted by the DOOVLA. Unfortunately the V5c now says that it cannot be used to scrap a vehicle and a certificate of destruction MUST be obtained.

Any ideas on what to do? Notify it as exported to Ireland? Notify the new keeper as Mike Brewer?

If you took the car to the scrapyard and have the ticket for it go back to the yard and ask them to process it, I have done this but I did have photos. plates and keys.

Also I have heard of people writting 'Scrapped' across the top of the red V5 and sending it off and them updating the database but you don't get an comformation letter back, you need to keep checking untill it disappears. I am trying another approch with an vaguely worded attached mail but haven't heard if it is successfull yet.

Fill in the details of the scrapper you used on the yellow part of the form and send it off to them. Probably not a bad idea to keep the rest of the V5 until you get confirmation and make a scan of the yellow part before you send it in.

It's more pointlessness from the DVLA - all they are doing is making life difficult for themselves in that thousands of V5's will be sent back with made up addresses because people can't notify that they have broken up the vehicle themselves and don't want the SORN fine.

Daft!

I'd just register it as exported by a mr Drew Peacock to Khazakstan

I would just send the V5 back to them with a letter telling them its already been scrapped, obv put your (regd keepers) address at the top and sign it. There’s not really a lot they can do then is there, if its scrapped its scrapped whatever their procedure says.

This is what I did 2 months ago. I added the name and address of the frag yard that cubed the shell. I got a 'thankyou for telling us you are no longer the keeper' letter 2 weeks later.

You could also use the 'selling your vehichle to a dealer/isurer/Gypo/dismantler' section (V5C3). Write down the name of the scrapyard it went to, do your signature, scrawl something where his should be and send that off as well. In fact, I'd do this and send the whole V5 off with a letter. Take copies and send special delivery to cover yourself for the inevitable DVLC fuck up.

Apparently we have one very persistant twat (sorry, I meant Lib Dem MEP) to thank for this nonsense, ostensibly to stop gyppos dumping cars in the street.

Cheers guys. As I mentioned I sent a accompanying letter with the Maestro logbook I scrapped last year which did the trick, I'll try the same again this time.

Its not illegal for a private individual to scrap a car, so why do they try to make it difficult (or impossible) for them to comply with the law? Will a law telling us we MUST dispose of a car via a treatment centre be the next step?

That narrows it down to about 87 LibDem MP's..............

+1 on the Special delivery - the best £5.75p you will ever spend.

There is NO NEED to spend £5.75 on registered delivery... A recorded delivery does exactly the same job ( Signed for upon delivery ) ... 60p + 1st or 2nd class postage.

The wife's a postmistress - allways spend the money....

Yeah Right... Lets spend nearly a fiver extra for no real reason except putting money into the Post Office coffers... if you post it RECORDED, it needs a signature before its delivered , once posted at your Post Office IT IS THEIR RESPONSIBILITY.

It won't make a difference anyway. If the DVLA lose it in their internal mail system it will still be your fault.

Heres the letter i'm sending with the V5c. I have altered some details in fear of reprisals.

To Whom It May Concern:

Regarding the above vehicle, VOLVO 240DL AUTO SALOON XVJ***T I would like to confirm that as of the 20th of October 2011 the vehicle has been scrapped. All mechanical components were removed along with all the trim and placed into storage for later use as spare parts for my other Volvo and the bare body shell then cut up to facilitate easier transportation and taken to a scrap metal recycling facility.

I am writing this letter as the facility for notify the DVLA of the scrapping of a vehicle using the V5c has now been removed but I would still like to discharge my responsibility for the vehicle.

If there are any problems regarding the scrapping of this vehicle please do not hesitate to contact me on the phone number provided.

Best regards,

Looks like DVLA are swopping out the old V5s with the newer red ones, I got a replacement one for mine Saturday, the letter that came with it said this was because they had become aware that some of the old blue ones have been stolen.
