What options do you wish you car had??

The DS Safari could do with central locking. You have heard of keep fit windows (its got those too), walking round a Safari with a key to unlock the drivers door, the tailgate and the passenger side is much better exercise, you need to take sandwiches and a flask it takes so long.

My Volvo had heated seats. One cold dark night I realised that my bum was getting uncomfortably hot. I stopped the car as quick as I could and leapt out. There was a burn hole in the seat squab and in the back of my trousers. Closer inspection when I got home revealed scorched underpants and a sore bum cheek. I disconnected the wiring and told the new owner that under no circumstances is he to reconnect it.

I always had an irrational fear of the heated seats in my Volvo. I turned them on once to see if they worked, which they did, but never again. The idea of an electric element buried deep under layers of foam, cloth and crushed velour was hideous. But I did grow up watching "fire kills" safety films.

You lot should try living with a German car.

Been there, done that; NEVER AGAIN!

DSDriver: you think that's big? I've had Cadillacs mate...

Pete-M: couldn't agree less on dark interiors. I love what the Americans used to do, matching the interior to the exterior so in a red car you get red seats, for example; but slightly ahead of that, I prefer a light interior anyway as I'm claustrophobic. Glass sunroof? Bring it on!

But it's all personal preference anyway.

Headlamp washers and heated seats

Who am I kidding? You'd think a car costing near on 30 grand 5 years ago would have had bloody long wave radio.

Sadly not. Test match special on radio 4 LW is sadly missed though. Sepcially as I've been spoilt by DAB for the last year or so in the proton.

Agreed Eddy. I love coloured interiors; especially the blue ones found in early Volvos. A friend's dad had a mid eighties Mazda 626 years ago and tht had a burgundy dashboard. Wonderful thing. Acres of black are just unappealing.

My dad's car has a cream interior. Looks fantastic.

Back in 1984, it wasn't just the LCD dash and voice synthesiser on dad's R11 Electronic which made it different. It also had the steel sunroof (for which I'm now paying the price) plus electric door mirrors, headlight washers, alloys, electric windows and the central locking with the remote "plip" - plus the 1.7 engine which despite well-known carb issues, makes the car go like a rocket. However, the best bit (and it still is, cos I've NEVER owned a car with one better) was the radio, which has in-built equaliser and column remote facility. The same was fitted in the upper market R 25s, but with such a massive output, high quality speakers and the small interior of a Renault 11, it is a sound system of truly epic proportions. If I'm working outside I often listen to the radio from the 11, it's that good (the tape's a bit iffy now, but I'm sure it could be sorted).

Back then though, you did need £7995 to buy it all - only pas was an option.
