My new shite

I've bought (yet) another land rover

Posted Image

Its a 109 Forward Control with 110 FC axles on it. Came without an engine, brakes, clutch, most of the body work (but I got the truck cab) etc.

Thinking I wanted to do something different I went to the scrap yard and found this:

So this last weekend me and a few friends glued it into the chassis:

I've no idea when it'll be finnished but its going to be a fun toy!

For thoes of you who can't spot the engine, its a Cummins 6B 5.9 litre. The gearbox is a Spicer 5-speed including a built-in overdrive. Max 2800 rpm and around 500 ft lb of torque.

See all the pictures here

Nice! great engines those Cummins 'B' lumps, out of a Leyland/DAF 45 series I'd wager, you must obtain a Cummins grille badge when its finished 8)

GR8 WORK!! Those B-series motors are found in a frighteningly wide range of commercial stuff, notably most 25-45 seat British built buses of the 1990s. However - and correct me if I'm talking codshite here - they were the diesel option in Dodge Ram trucks... the ones where the petrol lump was the Viper V10

Love these old Cummins! Nice conversion.Does this version have the multi-valve cylinder head like the L and NTE series? (Cant remember whether it was 3 or 4 valves per cyl - gsve it a lovely soind though - GR8 4 VERTICAL ZORST STAX!)

This engine is the same as used in the Dodge shit. Err I mean RAM. They use the Turbo version.

This perticular engine is out of a Leyland Roadrunner.

It is now all in place. I need an air over hydraulic brake servo is anyone has one.

I also have a radiator out of an International Harvester B100 Drott :D

I've shortened a truck silencer and made a rain keeper outer thingy:

I've got a dodge RAM turbocharger on my desk at work. Its fookin massive and cost 2 grand over the parts counter at Marshalls!

A while back I managed to procure (got given) a recon turbo for a Ford 360 engine - think Cargo. It's a Garrett T35 and bizarrely is common to the early model Escort Cosworth. Not 2 grand's worth though

That'd fit straight on my engine. I'll be sticking as NA though. Simpler the better with this thing, and I don't want any turbo lag.

Can't think why anyone hasn't done it before :D are you going to gear it up, or are you planning on towing reeeeally heavy loads up incredibly steep inclines at 25mph?

Posted

are you going to gear it up

Most deffinetly. I calculated that at 1200 rpm - peak torque, in 4th gear it'd do 25mph. In top gear it'd do around 33mph at a rough guess (thats guessing it has a 0.725:1 overdrive ratio). So, deffinetly gearing it up. I recon 60mph @ 1200 rpm will be just right. The good part is 1st gear is bottom right, so its not one you would commonly use. This is good as it is a super low ratio. So using the box as a standard 4 + reverse (ignoring the real 1st gear) its just the same as a land rover box

Heres a few updates (all into one post)

Lots of piccies!!!!!!!

Videos at the bottom.

After towing the frog back to my workshop, we set off removing all the parts of the engine which are not required. This tidied the engine up very nice as it was quite a mess of wires and pipes before. Amanda was set off with painting the body work in a lovely green Frog colour. After looking at the engine we had to take the sump off as the engine had been dropped by the scrap man on the sump. We realised that we could put the sump on backwards with a slight modification to the oil pickup pipe which would give us at least 6" more clearance on the front bottom of the engine.

We've had a good day:

Posted Image

The slave labour were turfed out of bed.

Posted Image

We quickly dropped the engine in. It took about 2 seconds to go from 4 foot high to 18" high. It somehow missed everything and landed on the chassis rails and all 4 engine mounts. Its a good thing I insisted people kept out the way of it too.

The rear bellhousing engine mount now welded into place.

The engine after recovering it from the top of the axle.

Even Amanda was rolling around on the floor painting the chassis.

Posted Image

The front engine mount tacked into place before welding onto the chassis.

More of yesterdays work:

Posted Image

Posted Image

Engine now properly mounted onto the chassis and the gear lever adjusted to go round the inverted exhaust pipe.

Posted Image

Even with the minimal space above the front axle to the engine, the sump is still very high up off the ground.

Posted Image

Very slight adjustment on the passenger side for the seat box to go around. The gear lever is in the perfect position so no modifying required at all :banana

Posted Image

Both the air inlet and the exhaust outlets are in the right places. I just need to find the pipes to make the exhaust pipe and air filter now.

Posted Image

After a trawl round the scrap yard I found an exhaust pipe the correct diameter, but it was 1' too long so I shortened it down.

As everyone knows, its not a Series-2 without the correct gear knob

I am going to be changing the rear crossmember for a large piece of C section girder. Not that I don't trust Das's one for holding together, but I would like something far more substantial than the standard rear crossmember.

I had the day off today (unexpectidly) so I spent the entire day working on Le Frog:

Finally, I have found a use for my 32-tonne bottle jack.

Mmmmmm, shiny

Best not let Dopey see this

After adding the shiny bits, I went on to rip off the rear spring hangers which Das had quickly attached to get the thing rolling. Then I had to make new parts to weld new outriggers on so I could then attach the spring hanger:

And of course, more red oxide paint:

And just to prove that its the rear axles which hold vehicles to the road:

Of course, 1/2 way though welding it started to rain

I have finally finnished welding the new rear spring hangers on. I've still got to sort out the front spring bushes and U bolts, and that should be the suspension side all finnished.

The bulkhead is next....
