1970s production car racing

My dad told me he did this once in the 70s in a Capri at Arlington, ironically. GR8 4 insurance premiums! not to mention lawsuits, health and safety and destroying your only means of transport.

Entertaining though. I wonder if lads in their Saxos would give this a whirl nowadays?

My mate Kirk who wasn't that into racing took his 6 month old Y reg Cortina company car around Wimbledon being evil little sods we were willing him to prang it, even if it was our lift home.

A friend of mine had an engine let go in their Beetle drag car a few years ago, at Santa Pod. Given that the class rule is "must be Volkswagen based, or Volkswagen engined" with no rules on age or safety equipment - a quick phone call to a VW dealer and a hire Golf was procured with a few hundred miles on the clock.

Something similar was on World of Sport back in the 70s.

A few cars, including a Roller a big yank tank and other assorted went round the oval.

I remember one of them getting totalled on the fencing and the Roller owner deciding that, perhaps, it wasnt such a great idea.

The driver of the Roller is legendary Hot Rod driver and dodgy perm wearer Barry Lee

I heard BL walked out stark raving from his trailer once at a stadium appearance when the event was delayed. Got in his car nekkid and drove it around in a demonstration "special". Dunno if he was pissed up or sober, or even if the story is true. But that's what I heard.

He did that more than once. He'd usually step out of his trailer and chat to you all buffed up.

Legend!
