Help, my rim is leaking

Anyone know of some good bodgery to seal up the tyre/shonky old wheel interface when lashings of 'bead sealer' ain't up to the job? Saw a Mk1 Cortina at Brands Snatch with some mastic like substance oozing out of said joint but never found the owner to find what they'd used.

Silicon out of a mastic gun should do it, hammer it in with a small socket, if you can get the low acid non corrosive stuff all the better, not ideal but can you still get tubes? That tyres starting to perish a little btw, you'd best stay below the ton.

Mastic I have, tubes I'd have to b,b,b,b,b,buy. Kinda wanted to hear someone say 'yeah that's fine, I do that all the time' before I get stuck in. I've and alloy which loses a bit of air and a steel which is a tad corroded on the bit the bead sits in is why I ask.

If it's corroded can't you file it back and paint it to give the tyre a better chance of sealing?

I had thought cleaning the inside lip of the rim where the tire seals before adding loads of that glue stuff they use would be best, that's what worked for my old Audi years ago when the same thing happened to me.

Depending what size it is you might not be able to tube it anyhow. Iirc from my tyre fitting days you can't tube anything with a lower profile than 70 series tyres. Another factor to consider is that nail+tube=instant deflation.

Whizz down to your nearest tyre place, ask them to remove the tyre and then spin the offending wheel on the balancing machine whilst holding a wire brush against the inner lip. Follow this by lashings of tyre seal, re-fit and re-inflate the tyre to about 50psi and then let it down to the desired pressure.

^ I had this, they used a grinding wheel to remove the corrosion. It wouldn't seal otherwise, no matter how much sealant they put on.

When I got the rims for my Impreza refurbed they put too much lacquer on them, and I came out to four flat tyres the next day. My tyre chap just sanded down the inside lip of the rim, job jobbed.

Have you tried hammering a smaller tyre over the rim?

That just made me lol muchly!
