190,000 mile Renault Safrane from a motor trader. I used to work close to this place and sometimes walked past. Was on for £895, then £795 and now I guess the trader now wants shot of it. Yours for £595.

Do high mileage French cars ever go wrong?

Renault's auto boxes are shite at the best of times, I wouldn't be buying one with 190k on the clock.

I'm afraid a further reduction will probably be required... seeing as a good Laguna II can be picked up for £400.

I would love it to be honest but don't think i would risk it unless the price dropped by another £300.

Seeing that a local garage was recently selling a 1998 top of the range 2.5 20v Questor model with only 56000 miles and fsh for £595 then i reckon that this one is baked bean cans.

Even if it only lasted 6 months, and it was then weighed in for scrap at about £150 a ton,its still a cheap comfy old wagon - at that age and money, you can't expect a new car which wont go wrong and die.If you want a decent one, spend over 20K on a new Renault which will still do the same things - go wrong, play electrical silly buggers, and end up being smacked with a hammer ! Only difference is Renault will pay for the first 3 years, after that, its pray and ride

I've a feeling that it's not just a Volvo engine in these later Safranes, but a Volvo box too. Mate of mine had a few late models, 2.0 and 2.5s. All were Autos with higher mileage - to which he added a lot more, and none ever went wrong. Know of a few others that have kept going too. Still too much though!

Yep another unwanted Safrane...

Its got the Volvo engine and a good box, hence the high miles, but no-one wants them as i,ve gone on about for ages!!

I would really only have a 2.5 in a phase 2 and as you all know a V6 in a phase 1,there are a few of these phase 2s still about and if you get the right one(with the options)they can be a nice barge for little money Tiggers 2.5 Questor find looked a gem, anyone buy it from here?

Nice to see someone else start a Safrane thread!

Five or so years ago, two previous owners, full Renault Service History, 65000 miles, 2.5 20v Executive, for £460.

That looked nice Pete, thats the one to go for a 2.5 executive, and if your lucky it will come with electric, heated seats,CD multichanger and heated front screen.

The important thing, Pete, is not how many years ago you bought it, but how many years it took you to SELL it.

Surely if it's basically clean and tidy, it would be worth scrap money plus a bit, for the Saf-specific panels and interior? If you're going to run an unusual car/bike/main battle tank/whatever, surely the best way is to pick up a parts donor or two, for peanuts.

Or is that going to be problematic nowadays, what with continuous insuring and all that bollocks?

It had electric heated seats, cd changer, heated front screen, but no sat nav.

Under a week, on ebay. I think it fetched about £950, but only because it was bull-buggeringly mint.
