For sale - Yugo 45A £SOLD

A few months ago I contacted Nigel when he was thinking about selling his Yugo 45...he told me to piss off as I was not having it as it was unsuitable for the sort of driving I have to do and whilst fine for a toy/runabout/backup vehicle was totally unsuitable for a 'need to drive 400 miles in a day for a meeting' type car....I talked him into it when the WIFE encouraged me seeing how cheap the insurance was.

OKOKOKOK Nige - you were right! It's not really a car suitable for my purposes I confess I was looking at the utter cheapness of the MPGs, Insurance, bits etc without considering the sort of mileage I have to do in it.

I bought the Yugo off Nige as a reaction to the crippling cost of running a Volvo 850 AWD 2.5 Turbo..a bit like throwing all your clothes out and dressing in an old coal sack with holes for the head and arms.

What is it:

Well, a Yugo 45a - think chopped Fiat 127.

On the whole it should now be pretty mechanically reliable - all of the issues I have had with it are due to the fact the car was laid up for 6 years and I've slammed 3000 miles on it in a month...not fair to judge it too harshly. There are one or two things that still need fixed/attention but I've been using it this week for my 40 mile commute and have had no issues at all - in fact the engine is running better than ever.

Good points

It's a Yugo 45a in unmolested condition - uber rare these days, there are only about 22 45's left on British roads.

Complete and very good BEIGE interior

2 front seat belts

3 rear seat belts

parcel shelf!

a courtesy light!

Hazards!

2 speed wipers!

wait....a REAR Wiper!!!!

HEATED REAR DEMISTER!!!!

(It just gets better and better)

34500 miles on the clock (well - it's been saying that for the last 3500 miles)

Everything works as it should

Windows winders contrary to what that prat Clarkson says are fine

The VERY best thing is the wonderful roarty 903cc engine - the same lump as is found in the Panda and makes that car a hoot to drive - the Yugo is even better fun. OHV so none of this timing belt nonsense to worry about!

Body work is pretty good for the age. Yugos were built of top quality steel and corrosion takes a long time to grip. There is only one actual hole - just above the rear off side light cluster - not visible when the boot is shut though. It's a couple of hours with a wire brush, rust killer and some filler - not even a weld.

The only area to watch will be the near side rear shock turret I noticed some bubbling within 3 inches of the shock mount - still solid on account of the thickness and quality of the steel but I would probably weld in a patch just to be on the safe side sometime in the next year or so.

The underside is in great condition for age - there are a few bits of underseal coming away and if I were keeping it I'd probably get under there and slap on some Bilt Hamber Chassis paint.

One or two small bits of bad paintwork that could be lived with if you want a ratty look or fettled if you want it smart - very easily - none of these require filling and some of them haven't even started rusting yet - seriously the steel is so good that you can ignore dinks for a long time

IT HAZ A LONG MOT - cant remember when but it is either March or June

Taxed till end August 2010 (cheap to tax - lowest of the pre 2002 changes)

The car has had new:

WHEELZ - Nige fitted a set of what look like Alphasud/GTVs with corresponding tyres - a wee bit of rub from the offside one when speed bumping or under load but this is because of a slightly bent in inner edge of the wheel arch under the car..could be sorted I haven't bothered. I did consider keeping the original wheels but they were pretty nasty and needed a new set of tyres. The Tyres on these are pretty good and the wheels make a big difference to the handling of the car - this one has loads of grip and behaves itself - unlike it's non alpha booted cousins!

Alternator - Nige fitted this and it is belting out 13Amps on the button

Fan Belt

Charging Wire

Battery

Yellow Headlight Bulbs

A set of new old stock badges

A recent service (by Nige)

Work done by me:

starting issue was due to a grubby starter motor - now stripped down, rebushed and working very well

and also the ignition switch - a dodgey XD1/9 bit of kit that eventually fails by refusing to put through enough ampage to crank the starter. I have disconnected the switch and installed an ignition on/off toggle switch and will install a starter button when it turns up - at the moment I complete the starter motor circuit manually by touching the two spade connectors together - starts every time now. The problem is finding a switch that will carry the 30amps - 25/27 amps won't cut it - hence the need for a starter button. Rather than get a new ignition barrel for the car I suggest replacing the toggle switch with a basic off/park/on key switch and keeping the starter button - the wheel lock still works and I will provide a quality steering wheel clamp for added security. Most of the US Yugo Club members have done this mod due to the incidence of starter switch and other ailments.

Fuel sender - this failed - I stripped it down and it is now doing what it is meant to but I can't get the fuel gauge to work - suspect a short and will have a look at this.

New passenger side wing mirror - Yugo but slightly different from the previous one - you have to look closely to notice

Mounted Badges

T-Cutted and detailed the interior

Bad points

There is a short somewhere on the main beam circuit of the off side headlight - I am still looking into this and may have it fixed by the time it goes

that's about it really

Fuel gauge not working

Needs a new Speedo Cable

Needs a new airbox - we are trying to locate the last one - Nige took it off and I have been running it since without one...were I holding onto it I would fit it again but it is a hoot to drive wthout

So- there you have it -

I'll get some new points for it as well after frying the points connection which still works fine BTW!

It is worth pointing out that when I showed the pics to Phil Dust of the Yugo club he commented on how original the interior was - there is no stereo although an aerial is fitted as standard and there has never been one so there are no holes in the door cards.

So - why am I selling it - well, in an ideal world I would hold onto it but I cannot afford to run 3 cars just now even if the Yugo is effectively free. Fact is I need something with longer legs and a bit more modern to do the miles - not necessarily newer - but a bit more modern - If I could afford it I would be holding onto it as it is UBERSHITE and I really really love it as a runabout - and it is the best car I have EVA worked on - so easy to access everything.

Parts and support are easy to find through the owners club and some bits are even avaliable in motor factors! WOW!

I paid Nige £400 for it - it had a bit more tax then and this was before the starting issue with the switch. As you need a new speedo cable, probably a fuel sender but I might get the gauge working and undoubtably it wold be an idea to fit a 1950's style ignition switch (ie no starter function) then it's £350.

I would consider a swap - it would have to be reliable, reasonably comfy, have a decent set of legs and a reasonable amount of MOT.

Are you up in Scotland?

Yes I am in Edinburgh...

However, I do need to be down south in the next few weeks so happy to drive to Brum/Surrey/M4/M6/A1M/M42 for swapsies...ifa sale then I am buying that Celica on RR at some point - it's in Surbiton so I'm sure somthing would work - not like the Yugo costs much in petrol to get places! - £35 Edinburgh to West Sussex for instance!

Presuming my BMW sells (although no bids currently) I would be very interested. Shame I bought something last night or I'd be on it like a car bonnet

That works out at 78MPG.

depends where in West Sussex - and the cost of the gas - and whether or not you happen to have a 10p per lt discount voucher!

I'm looking forward to seeing how you get on with the Celica as I've been looking at T200 series convertibles for the future.

Now the Yugo is fully operational again, I've been enjoying driving it for the last couple of weeks, sadly though at the moment it is now surplus to requirements so it's back on the market again.

It now has a fully operational alternator and has had most of the charging circuit wiring replaced. A starter button and cut out switch are fitted and the car comes supplied with a £90 steering wheel lock for security.

MOT tlll April

Tax ends this month (August)

£350 - can be taxed at cost
