Advice for max.£££ for min.effort please folks. I have minimal time to be fiddling about with it.

P1250133.jpg

It's proper tatty, especially outside, interior not bad. Grubby grey vinyl *I think*.

T+T'd 'til autumn, 190xxx miles but meticulously maintained by Merc specialists. The lady (friend of the family) had the chance of a much newer one very cheap, so this has been stood a month or two. Fired right up first touch and drives fine (auto).

She's had it since almost new and loved it. She wants at least six for it, and I don't want to be investing a great deal of my time if there's no hope of it beating that figure.

Waddaya reckon?

Thankyouplease. Any thoughts very much appreciated.

It would export for about that figure up here. mate got 450 for a buggered C200 saloon. Diesels are WANTED.

Polish the rusty areas at least - the front wings are mostly just stained from rust and will come up loads better if you spent 5 minutes on them. Once you've scrubbed the stains away you'll be left with the actual rust which I bet isn't that bad.

Really the car wants someone to spend a few hours giving it a proper valeting session - a good polish and wax, clean up the hubcaps and the tyres. Being as it's a white car, maybe invest in one of those touch-up pens just to take your eye off the rust a bit, especially on that back tailgate. It looks a pretty straight car to be honest, it'd be daft to let it go out looking like that.

Thanks guys, I'm just snowed under with work at the moment. But I'll give it a quick scrub and find some white paint. Years ago I smartened up my similarly scabby Maestro by about 80% by doing only that.

Then some nicer pics and onto the 'bay with it?

What worries me is this:

Looks rather smarter and didn't have a sniff at the £500 start price. Not far away from here, too.

Yeah, but the pictures are lousy and the description makes it sound a lot more rubbish than it probably is.

Short test will probably be the (price) killer but veg oil friendliness will defo help. I'd have seen £800-ish in it with a full test and some light tidying up.

Trouble is, with late 1990s Mercedes, thats probably at the end of its life. That front wing will need replacing for a start - those rust stains will turn into holes when you try and rub them down. If it needs much work for the Mot, I'd just get shot of it to an exporter.

Good grief, these rust very well indeed, if its like that above, what do they rust like underneath!!

Thats a farmyard hack now i recon looking at the state of it...

Do you happen to know exactly when the MOT expires please Joe? Cheers.

Sadly, those rot like fuck, inner wings too. the W202 is worth sod all these days in that condition. £300-£350 will shift it, but round here at least no-one really wants them unless they're mega cheap. A lot of our local dealers just send em over the bridge. I had 2 and I thought they were fab, but when they get like that one...

Got to admit, I think I'd just frag that and have done with it. Well maintained it may be, but it looks shagged and will only put potential buyers off. Were it a W123 or 124, you'd be fighting them off with a shitty stick.

There's four months on it, expires 21st October. Why, wotchathinkin Billy?

A quick look on Autotrader was more encouraging than eBay. There's nothing under £995, so there might be some interest on there at £745 or summert..?

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/search/used/cars/mercedes-benz/c_class/postcode/bd234bu/radius/1500/body-type/estate/price-to/3000/sort/priceasc/fuel-type/diesel

There's no danger of me sending it for fragging. I disapprove wholeheartedly, and it should fetch two of three times bridge price on eBay anyhow.

I took my mother down to Malham and back in this last night, and it drives perfectly, it's smooth and quiet, changes and pulls well. Even she said it's quiet and comfy, and she's reluctant to compliment shite and loves her newer Audis. The brakes are sharp and it stops in a straight line, and every button that we tried works, apart from the leccy mirrors; the knob is broken. (As is the o/s door mirror glass.) There is a receipt for under-body sealing, but whether it was done in time, I don't know.

I'm off out to pop the bonnet and prod the inner wings...

Sounds like you need to find a couple of s/h white front wings then! The tailgate/rear arches will probably respond to some rubbing down and touch up treatment.

It does look a bit shitty in the pics. That rust staing really lets it down. When I sold my smiley transit it had quite a few areas a bit like that, I didnt want it looking crap in the sale ad photos so I thought id try polishing the worst of the rust stains away. T cut and most similar stuff was useless so I raided the kitchen for Cif cream cleaner, and rubbed some of that on like polish and it came up a treat. It still left behind some small rust scabs but it was no where near as bad as it was before, and it cost near to sod all!

Some more grim images in last night's drizzle;

Slight weep of something olily from the front of the lump.

What I could see of the inner wings are remarkably clean.

Not a spot of grot to be found here.

Other thatn what's externally visible, the only rust I found is in the spare wheel well, next to the battery tray.

Oh Eddy, this belongs to a neighbour and family friend, so I had nothing to do with the poppy sticker!

The latest pictures show that it's fundamentally sound, albeit cosmetically challenged, as the vast majority of non-enthusiast owned C-Classes are nowadays. It has to be worth a monkey to someone who wants a decent hack or towing barge :)

I lavished a whole two dusky minutes on this heap.

It's £300ish.

If it had a towbar I'd have made an offer on it as a disposable towing machine, but these just aren't worth anything nowadays.

Get it up on a ramp and i recon there's a lot more rot to find! If you want 500 quid for that, you've at least got to bolt on some clean second hand wings (in the right colour)

Other wise its 250 - 300 MAX as its not exactly a long mot either
