gtd2000 Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 If they can't figure out a RHD car with white front and yellow rear plates is from the UK/GB they need re-trained... I'm pretty sure Cyprus and Gibraltar have the same set-up...wouldn't be surprised to find out it's the same for Malta. That's a good point - I'll get my coat...
pompei Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 That may be so but I wouldn't give Monsieur Plod le sadist any opportunity to pull me over were I driving in France. Or Signore Carabinieri in Italy ...
gtd2000 Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 I have to say I do have a bit of an attitude when certain location make things difficult for the motorist. I used to go into Edinburgh very frequently but now that they have made parking a bit of an issue - I never go there at all during the day. When I was working in the NL, I often used to drive down to France for a run but once they brought in this hi-vis vest bollocks I just stopped going there....perhaps if they drove more Japanese cars they wouldn't need them - sour grapes in my opinion
Conrad D. Conelrad Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 I really can't understand the people who feel they have to plaster their national identity on an irrelevant bit of government-mandated plastic. If you are THAT proud of your nationality, why not just cover your rear windscreen in a massive ENG/SCO/CYM/whatever sticker? I could perhaps understand it if the Euro symbols were compulsory, but they're not so there's no need to put an unofficial one on your car. I don't like them, but only because they clutter up the numberplate. I feel the same way about dealer plates too. 'BIGCOCK MOTORS NO1 FOR TALBOT IN CHESTER LE STREET 0191 999 9999' and the borders some plates have. Awful.
gtd2000 Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 I have to admit I like the idea of having a small fairly discreet logo on a plate that comes with the car - a small GB logo inside a Eurostar sounds fine to me - even although I don't consider myself to be a "European". I'm all for the freedom of movement of course but it ends there for me.
Rod/b Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 When I was working in Holland during 2008~2009 I just put a paper print of a GB sticker in my back window I once had a burgundy Camry that I rollered white with B&Q Value Gloss. Seeing as i'd made such a good* job of the paint, I decided that it couldn't hurt to draw a GB badge on the boot with a permanent marker pen. As for the country identifier thing, I had some plates on my Audi that had the Euro star thing with UK instead of GB. It confused the hell out of a Swiss border guard who couldn't understand why three blokes with British passports were in a UKrainian registered car. That took some explaining....
boobydoo Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 When i was in the queue at Dover for the ferry last week, P&O actually send someone round the cars to check that you have those headlight beam adaptors. I never bother as I had no plans to drive at night. The bloke said the french police would be "all over me" without them, oh and did I know they sell them on board for £7.99. I thought maybe the police had really hotted up on it,so I bought a pair. Waste of money. Not a gendarme in sight. Just a nasty ploy by P&O to make you buy their crap.

I drove round for two years without them in Holland - I'm such a rebel

They reckon you can get a very good finish with a roller as long as you take the time to flatten it all off - as documented in the $50 paint job thread. Kudos for the the GB marker pen idea
worldofceri Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 I've got England flag plates on my Volvo as applied by a previous owner. They do look a bit toss and at one time I'd have changed them straight away but I'm more like 'so what?' now. I look at it like I'm doing my bit to reclaim the St. George's Cross for non-skinhead, non-xenophobic folk who don't really care about football. I would like a set of old-font plates, but not enough to shell out for them.

chaseracer Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 The gaps at each end were filled with Halfrauds stickers; Welsh dragon at one end, EU flag at the other.Oh, and you were doing so well up to then.

If I bought a car with one I'd remove it without any hesitation. I've got a Welsh Dragon on my Westfield plates so that the Heddlu (Welsh police) don't think I'm a tourist and nick me on sight. It works
worldofceri Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 It's a Swedish/Japanese car with a French engine* built in the Netherlands (probably by Poles) and driven by an Englishman who was born in Wales. So really you could put just about any flag on the feckin' plate. *Might be wrong about this one.
