Anyone fancy doing a head job on an Alfa 147 TS..

Sorry for this shitty thread, but here goes....

I've bought a 147 twin spark that's slipped it's belt. Belt has been replaced before I bought it, and now it won't start. Compression test=no compression.

Now, I knew this was how it might go, but to be dead honest, I really don't have the time or inclination to whip the head off and lap some new valves in. However, I also don't have the necessary ££££ to just send it in somewhere.

So, the question is, is there anyone out there who fancies taking this on as a cash foreigner/job on the side/experience for apprentice etc. Cash is king, of course, but unfortunately, I don't think I've got enough of it.

Yes, I know this is a bit cheeky, but if you don't ask.......

I think Chris lives in Bolton.

Chris, I expect young Mini-Mad might be up for this, he's a whizz with mechanics. Worth a try anyhow I would think.

Camshaft locking tool is required. There are two and they are handed. They sit on the cam lobe whilst the cams are on the rock. When I did mine I found the cap bolts too short so use the ones from the front locating caps. The head bolts are 9mm Ribe bolts although you might get away with using torx splines.

For this reason I'm out.

Meggers is right about the Cam locking tools. I used a tame Alfa mechanic who did foreigners to do the variator and belt on my old 155 TS.

I may know a lunatic garage that'll do it for you.

I would've done it for nowt, I've got all the stuff to do it but the cam locking thing worries me.

And there I was, just about to clean my old Browning 9mm...

You need both the cam locks and a DTI gauge down number 1 plug hole to get TDC - there are no marks on the crank or cams. After a valve/piston interface, you also need to drop the sump and remove any piston(s) that have been battered by a valve. The reason for this is because a) it can squash the top of the piston down and trap the top ring and B) these have narrow big end shells which can either be flattened, or have a hairline crack. That's the reason so many of these are on Ebay with buggered botton ends.

If it's a 2 litre, you also need a balancer shaft belt. If I remember correctly, the 1.6 has different cam locks to the others.

Bugger. Not looking good, this, is it?

Pete, let me know if your contact will be willing to do this, and a rough cost.

Everyone else, thank you for your advice, and kind words of doom!

I really do buy some shit.
