Towing dolly needed

YO!

I've won that Fiat Croma Auto off eBay. Its 130 miles from home. I was going to get it running on site, then A-frame it home with the engine ticking over in Neutral to keep a bit of oil pumping round the gearbox. Maybe chuck an extra litre of fluid in the box as well. However, speaking to the seller he reckons the fuel pump is b0rked (helpfully didnt mention that in the ad) so maybe getting it running is not going to happen as easily as all that. And, I'm not buying a new pump - at least not straight away, as they are £100+ (bosch in-tank job).

So the next best solution after the A-frame is of course a towing dolly, but I sold mine ages ago. Does anyone know of one that I could cadge?

Failing that, I'm tempted to just 'A' it home anyway with some extra fluid in and hope for the best! Might run it for a minute or two off a can of 'easy start' to get a bit of oil round the box before setting off. What does everyone think.

I am mega skintola so, all suggestions for repatriating it need to cost less than £1.

Didn't see the eBay listing sorry so excuse me if these sound like daft questions:

Is it taxed or MOT'd and is it petrol or diesel? If it's petrol can you get a generic fuel pump from a motor factors and lob that on? That way you fire the MUTHA up and tow it on the A-frame.

If it's taxed there's always another way to get it home.

I know we had this discussion before, but....

if you took the spark plugs out so that there is no compression and put the transmission in say "2" would the thing back feed through the torque converter and spin up the engine enough to get the pump working?

No tax or ticket. I do have a pile of fuel pumps knocking about from my exploits with the ARgenta admittedly, so maybe something could be rigged up with one of those and some hoses etc to bring it to life.

I meant whilst on an A frame being towed, would the gearbox spin an engine with no compression and hence make the gear box oil pump turn?

seriously STUPID question: What would happen if you just took the 'box off?

just a drive shaft would do

you'd have to refit the end bit though or the wheel bearing would fall apart

I was just about to say that! Id imagine the gearbox end is held on with a load of torx bolts onto a flange or something, take the boot off the other end, feck about to get the circlip out and off you go!*

Do any other drive shafts fit? Maybe go to the scrappers and get another end to hold the bearing together.

Is it Norf or Sahhhf of you Bolls?, and is it over this way?

What about the other kind of dolly?

These are rated to 1500 lbs each and the site doesn't mention a maximum speed. GR8 for A framing autos? :D

Oxford. Bugger. If it'd been this way, I'd have dragged it for ya (for the price of the gas).

OK this car is coming on the back of a Shiply truck on Tuesday!!

Heres a top tip: List your stuff on Shiply, then look through the feedback of your preferred bidder. With a bit of luck he'll have left something like 'MANY THANKS FROM XYZ RECOVERY'. Then google XYZ Recovery, if you find them ring them up and ask them to knock a little bit off the price to go outside shitly. Then book em directly and avoid the frankly hideous rip-off fees that Shiply now charge (they take 10% of the cost of the job off the transporter, plus charge YOU £20 for using their service!!

Bah! I was looking forward to some more tat based A-frame dragging action!
