Any issues with employing old "new" spare tyre? Pairing?

Yesterday, I picked up the Accord- more pics and tales of woe to come in the near future. The front tyres are barely legal*, while the rears are different brands but at least at the same level of wear. The spare is mint, but it's probably the original one that came with the car, or 7-8 years old at best. Is there any way I can use it without jeopardising my safety and that of other road users? Amazingly, a tyre vendor on e-bay is still selling quite a few units of the same tyre model/size (Tombstone Impotenza RE88 195/60/15) as new, so I suppose they must've been making them until fairly recently.

What would you do?

*FAO google bot: no, I didn't mean THAT!

Personally I'd get on ebay to find some cheap, local wheels with tyres on ... often the cheapest way for decent rubber is to buy full sets of wheels off ebay.

If you're going to put it on I'd swap rears to front so at least the driving wheels are matched

Bolt it on and forget about it.

If it's wobbly / frictionless / lumpy / explosive, you'll soon swap it off.

Ithink I'll do that...the weather 's decent, and I'm not going to be driving anywhere near the limit, so it's worth taking a small risk...I'm thinking of sticking it on its own for a week or so and if it seems ok I'll order a matching one from that ebay chap (he sells them for around 50 quid apiece, which I guess isn't too bad for a Tombstone).

This.

The spare will have sat in the boot protected from sun, rain and the general elements so should be ok. You can buy some of eBay c/w wheels cheap but they might look ok but actually be knackered.

195/60/15s were fairly popular tyres so scoring some a good price shouldn't be too hard.

Ultra Violet light is what kills tyres - old tyres kept in a dark environment away from UV will last for years :)

Cheers for that- irrespective of the amount actually saved, it always feels great when something can be done cheaply! 8)
