GOTCHA!

I just don't think people should report untaxed vehicles, just like people grassing on TV license dodgers, and peering through the curtains to see what the neighbours are up to. Unless you hate them or have a problem with society. What's the difference?

Ok, not the nicest thing to do, but if you don't break the rules, they wouldn't fine you. I'm likely to still get clobbered from the Renault 21 at some point but fair-do's. I f*cked up.

There's someone in my neighbourhood keeps an eye on everyone's road tax. Just to be helpful like. They're not so keen to make themselves known, when the person they kindly helped makes it known locally, that they're a tad annoyed.

Thankfully, they've no idea what a motor vehicle with no MOT looks like...

So far as I'm concerned, if it isn't MOT'd/taxed, but isn't used; then it shouldn't be a problem. Flagrantly flout the rules for your own advantage; you should be getting your arse kicked.

My opinion of petty offences are that unless they affect me directly, I have no right to cause any bother about it. I reckon the majority of people will do the odd thing in their life which isn't technically "above board" and I see no reason to make a mountain out of a molehill. It's none of my business.

Incidentally, here's a fun story involving someone confronting me for having no road tax (on the way to an MOT, so it was legal anyway): http://www.autoshite.com/phpbb3/viewtop ... 86#p194586

I often wonder whether the coppers are taking backhanders from the recovery firms, the way they seem so desperate to tow cars away at the slightest opportunity.

I was told that the recovery firm pays a tenner to the coppers who arrange for a car to be removed. Dunno how true that is but they do seem very keen to remove any car that looks slightly abandoned! The inlaws Rover 214 was parked on the side of a country A road a few years ago after it had a blowout. It was out of the way but the cops still "recovered" it. How thoughtful of them  .

I've hard this a few times too and it might explain why when sometimes people break down the coppers are suddenly very keen to get you away from this 'dangerous and busy' road and therefore call in the recovery agent with the police contract.

In the case of the inlaws, they actually returned to the car just as the recovery truck turned up. The rozzers kept them talking as the recovery driver rushed to get the car loaded. I wonder how the law would stand if the inlaws just stuck a spare on and drove off. Who would pay for the recovery truck? has the car actually been seized by the cops or what?

^Yeah, but it is one of the traffs stock replies..."MOT'd yesterday, was it sir? Well, that was yesterday; today I'm telling you it's illegal. Have a 21-day citation/ASBO/ban/fortnight in the stocks/death penalty* sir". It's more down to the lack of actual traffs on the road, that some of the obvious deathtraps aren't picked up, than it's the fault of the MOT system.

Besides, you won't be getting a tax disc without a valid MOT, either in your local Post Office or online.

I've been pulled twice recently by the police doing "construction and use checks" (while in the Rover). It's only 9 years old FFS! To be fair, the second time the cop said to me that my Rover was "in fantastic condition"

And it's true what someone said about the authortites knowing fuck all about cars - my mate had his car dipped for red diesel. Yeah, a 911 Turbo will run really well on red diesel.
