Lovely Ovlovs 8)

Was Madison (the beige 244) you car? I remember it being advertised on the RWD Volvos forum some time ago and was quite taken by the idea of owning it, but it was far too clean and tidy for me and would have had to live outside...

Yup it is indeed Maddy - I bought her off a couple in Wakefield who showed her. She was so mint I sold her 4 months later as I was acutely aware that my hard use of cars would have had an efffect on the superb condition so I sold her to a private museum in Holland. She is used - about 500 km a year but mostly on display - probably the best thing for her as she had an awful 3 speed gearbox with the crappest axel ratio resulting in 4000 revs at 68mph - pretty though - you felt really special driving her and would always get waved at - I loved the colour

Lovely Daimler, I like the Double-Sixs.

An impressive motor history you have there. My faves are the Volvo 244 and the Daimler, which looks majestic. Did you own it long enough to see some big bills? I'd fancy one for maybe six months, just to see how the other half lives :)

As a hardened shiter, I never thought I'd hear myself say this but that Daimler is absolutely gorgeous and I love it! :D:D:D

TBH I would hesitate to call any of those shite...all look really clean, I especially like the volvos and the daimler. A guy by me is always selling this shape of Jags cheap, but I just don't dare.

Glad to hear that the car went to a good home and will be around for a long time yet :)

The Daimler was, indeed majestic. I owned it for about 5 months and in that time it was my daily driver and clocked about 1000 miles a week over the winter. obviously my employer was picking up the fuel bill. All was well until it started to develop a fault with the gear box ECU at which time I offed it pronto to Rob of the XJ40 club. The ECU replacement is £1500 for a new one - only you can't get new ones. The problem with the XJ40 DD6 is that it was rushed into production by ford. The car is wonderful but requires a rolls royce budget to run because of this they are rather cheap - this one cost me £800 but you'd struggle to find one for that these days. The square headlight XJ40s are indeed cheaper than the round ones - I actually prefer the square ones and do like the look of the XJ40 - I have had several - 2 Daimler sovs, a 4.o and a 3.6 and a Jag 4.0 Sov as well as this DD6 - The best bet are the Daimler Sov 4.0s which come with the square lights - you can get a good un for a grand and they are mechanically pretty bullet proof - the only things to watch are keeping the leccy dry, water leaks into the cabin and front bushes get eaten - replacing them is a 1 day job and there are about 30 of the fekkers. A mate of mine worked at Jag when the XJ40 was in production and he told me you should always go for the Daimler - the spec is better but more importantly they were mostly assembled by hand on a parallel production line.

DD6 XJ40s are the brave man's choice - although the car looks like a normal XJ40 under the skin just about everything is different - they didn;t make verry many of these and consequently the parts avaliability for some bits is very bad - gearbox ECUs are only avaliable second hand and swap hands for about £400. However, Rob says that one of the former Jaguar electiricans who is now retired is currently being coaxed into reconditioning these units. The other issue is the dizzy - as it is effectively 2 straight six engines in V formation the dizzy nestles deep in the V and is essentially two 6 valve dizzys back to back - the only problem is that should one of the sides fail - ie knackered dizzy cap or rotor arm and ignition stop then, as the other half is still working the ECU thinks all is dandy and makes up for the lack of power in the dead half by dumping fuel in that part of the engine which then proceeds to leak all over the rather hot exhaust manifolds - Rob says he has lost one V12 Jag this way and has heard of others going the same way - so it is essential that you maintain these cars well if you want to live!

Anyway, it was lovely to own one for a few months - my boy was quite put out when he saw that the volvo that replaced it lacked walnut champagne tables!

If you are ever tempted by XJ40s and you can do a lot worse as they are lovel cars and a lot more reliable than they are made out to be - get a 4.0 and try and get either a daimler or a Jag Sov - steer clear of cloth interiors and the smaller engines - they drink more gas. Oh and if you can get one with the non digital dash then it is a good idea as it invariably lights up like an xmas tree - you can get afterr market dash conversions which are not too hard to fit

So that's where it came from.

I've got to go and fix the bloody thing, again, this morning. Getting through all the little jobs on it now though. Looked great on those wheels, I'll have to find another set. So far it's had a fan belt, clutch cable, rear wheel bearings, rear brake shoes and a load of other bits'n'bobs. Now the bloody thing won't idle properly.

Oh, who buffed all the paint to oblivion? Looks nice'n'shiny on that pic. If you saw it now you'd not be impressed.... Still, it was cheap.

LOL! KWALITY MOTAH MATE! SCOOTAZ GARANTEED!

The paint - yes well I swapped her for a LS400 - the previous owner needed a car with 3 point belts in the rear - his missus insisted. He told me that the previous owner (a cabby club member) had had her painted but it had been a pisspoor job - he had then had a go at flatting back with some T cut - using a large and powerful polisher which I found in the boot and about 7 pints of read T cut - I don't think re realised that you have to have a reasonable tickness of paint.

When running its a delight to drive and I really like her.

The roof is new but badly fitted and water can ingress form the pram arms and there is obviously no foam seal in the roof above the doors as when driving in the ran you get a drip on your knee form the roof handles.

The fuel filter needs cleaning out and it needs a new tank or a flush as it is full of rusty crap - I replaced the fuel filler pipe - the previous one had the top 3 inches missing and the 'pipe' was a hole through years of caked mud so every time the car was filled up a load of crud ended up in the tank. This was on my todo list but the mot ran out

other than that it is ok 'cept for the wheel bearings

I remember the for sale thing saying the paint wasn't great, even though it looked nice in that photo. Red doesn't seem to show up it's faults in photos for some reason!

The roof has a load of slashes in (to be fair they were there when it was bought from Chris), fuel filter has been sorted (gauge still reads incorrectly though). The rear bearings were driving me mental (Emma's kids have to go in it, so I wouldn't let her use it with rumbly bearings, I'm funny about wheel bearings). It does go like stink for a 1.8 carb, and seems to drive well enough. It stops ok with rear brakes fitted too.

Next bits needed are aloys, front shocks, retrim and repaint again...

The DAF looks ace in that pic on here too. Not so shiny in real life, certainly not at the moment.

didn't know Chris had sold it on. The roof was in good nick and new when I had it but due to shite fitting wasn't right - I was going to change it for a new one and have it professionally fitted. TBH if I had had the off road space I was going to keep her as I really liked it - it does indeed go like stink for a 1.8 just bee careful with the crud - I used to cleanse the glass filter every week and keep the tank at least half full.

Oh- I replaced the fan belt on a roadside repair when I had it - you might want to confirm the tension in case it is too tight and giving the alternator gype

Would I be right in thinking they're R19 16v alloys in the pic?

yup - they are renner 19 alloys - by the time I got the car the steelies were on - I had always planned to put alloys on it but it was the end of a long....very long todolist!

You have had some very interesting cars. The DD6 is wonderful, I love the Citroëns, the orange Volvo is pure nostalgia and the Daf is bonkers in a good way! Love it!
