I had just left work this morning in my works van, travelling along a straight road following another car,i was doing 35in a 30 and this sneaky copper was hiding in someones driveway entrance with his hairdryer pointing our way with no high vis etc on,and not until i actually passed him i saw his pencelpushing friend writing plates down standing 6 foot in the driveway, not visable at all...is this allowed, and hopefully i won,t get done..i,ve read that speedos are about 3mph out at 30 anyway, but i can,t get over this copper.

Was he a real copper? or one of these wanky 'community speed checks' for old folk to occupy themselves with between episodes of Midsomer Murders. If the latter you should flick them the V's and chuck a few pages of cannibal dwarf porn at them if you see them again.

They have to pull you straight away if it's a handheld gun. If you were doing an indicated 35 you won't get "done"...... speedo is often up to 10% out, plus although it varies slightly from force to force you're normally looking at a minimum of 10% plus 3mph (sometimes 4mph) before they give you a tug - so 30mph zone they'll pull you at 37/38mph actual, which is pretty much getting on for 40mph indicated.

Are you sure it wasn't one of the busybody local initiatives that gives residents a speed gun, they mark down registrations, and you get a "polite" letter from the police suggesting you should slow down?

They do similar stuff over here... if they want to do you, they'll find a way, so don't let it stress you out.

I think they also have to have signs up, even if it's just a handheld or portable check.

More likely to be a local busybody who has bought his own unit. You will probably see him on the regional news at some point moaning about the busy road he has just moved to being, well, busy.

Can anyone please explain this to me, especially what those signs mean?

I frequently go through those villages and from time to time I see a white van in Newnham Bridge, parked visibly on a forecourt on a bend and near a blind junction, so fair enough, but I've never seen anything in either of the other villages. Is this West Mercia Police adopting the al-Qaeda approach; after an initial campaign you don't actually need to set off bombs, just threaten to and you can cause chaos. I think the fact that a small village in rural Worcestershire, as English as Midsomer, has appointed (or more likely self-appointed) a 'spokesperson' says it all :(

It'll be a community based (or inspired) warning to speeders.

They do the same not too far from here and I occasionally see the odd pensioner holding a hand held speed camera thing. I don't think they have any powers to 'do' you, but I believe they report to the police and you may/may not get a warning letter.

I'm going to stick my neck on the block here and say I support them in this matter, at least locally anyhow. The road/s most targeted near to me are 40mph zones for a good reason and the amount of dickheads who see them as a personal race track of some sort is unreal.

I suspect lots of other villages are sick to the back teeth of people tear arsing through at stupid speeds and have spoken to the local police about trying to slow them down a bit.

No it wasn,t them oxygen thiefs,i see them day in day out, they always have the yellow signs up,sometimes slightly hidden aswell, this was a young copper with a hat on,but HOPEFULLY i,am not getting done,if so my old man can have the points,he likes me!!!!!

No offence chief but I bet if people were razzing past your front door at daft speeds all day and night you'd be a bit pissed off.

Aye, while it's irrelevant now and Mr Bollox made me laugh in a silly manner, I'm with Cavette on the self-policing folk. Used to see them in action in the Fens, usually during school-travel hours, which seems fair enough. I get f*cking sick of being overtaken by people in a 30 zone, when I'm doing 30 and there are children around so you can understand why the residents may want to do something about it.

I agree with the Coffin dodgers in some ways,i have a 3 year old and don,t want to see him ploughed down by some idiot doing 60 in a 30,tell you what though, anyone on here live in Cranleigh???

Christ they are everywhere around there....

So they're not 'oxygen thieves' if they're protecting your 3 year old but they are if you're speeding in your work's van?
