wackywacerwill Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Just stumbled across these, all new to me. Check the swoopy lines man. And a link for those who want moar>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>http://www.leylandp76.com/general/force7/force7.html
Shep Shepherd Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 The P76 and Force 7 had a great deal of potential. Pity that British Leyland's 1970s troubles led them to them being canned.
seth Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 I always feel as though these look a bit like what you'd find under "70s muscle car" in a kids book full of generic car illustrations.
pogweasel Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Like they got a Mach 1 Mustang, a Renner 17 and a Taunus Coupe and put them into some kind of auto-mashup machine, with slightly dissatisfying results??
CreepingJesus Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Crikey! At first glance I thought that was more than a little 'Mustang-y', but it certainly isn't. I'd have one yet. I did have a squint at the articles on the web page you posted, and the proposed 350bhp Repco engined job would've been very interesting. Just as well it didn't turn up here - it would've had an 1800 B-series boat anchor in it...
Mr_Bo11ox Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 There is one in the UK I think, although it might have been nicked and bangered by now I suppose.

RedSparrow Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Yer, I remember the one in this country being on ebay about 5 years ago. Wasn't it kept here and owned by a senior BL man originally? I fink so.
CreepingJesus Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 ^ It does say on that website, that one Force 7 was sent to the UK for testing/approval or somesuch. So maybe that's the one?

I read somewhere that it was used by Lord Stokes and registered with the DVLC as a Rover That cheeky chappy...ah the perks of running a car maker, eh? Indeed. I understand that some car magazine journos saw Sir Donald driving the F7 and thought that the car was an SD1 prototype

I read somewhere that it was used by Lord Stokes and registered with the DVLC as a Rover sold to a local car dealer in Hawera..not far from me..for reportedly 100000squid..as seen at the last car show we entered.. and a Targa Florio just for equal measure
CreepingJesus Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 It's had some life, that motor! Looks odd to see a fairly familiar 'Leyland' script on the bootlid of a muscle car. B-series jokes aside, I wish they had sold them here. Ah well, another one for the 'what if' fantasies list.
CreepingJesus Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 ^^AKA Leyland P76. Alas, I didn't know much about Leyland Australia's own creations, so it's been an education!
flat4alfa Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 Ah, well take a look at Austin Tasman and Kimberley Then Morris Nomad And the 2.6 Litre Marina is lush Plenty others.
fotorabia Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 ..ooops..to late..ah well..Austin Tasman..Kimberley and P76..these were the last 3 in house Aussie design until all the problems in the UK manufacturing process ground the whole thing to a halt..and the P76 V8 wasnt helped by the OPEC fuel price increases..my father bought a new Tasman in 1971..he hated it and replaced it with a Toyota Corolla
flat4alfa Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 There were also two Austin Landcrab test beds for P76. One had the Rover V8 fitted longitudinally and the other was transverse. Will dig photo unless someone gets in there first We would have had P76 brethren in the UK if they hadn't cancelled the planned Rover P8. Instead the plans went southwards and begat the P76. SD1 came later. I spent a year in Aus, but never saw a running P76. Plenty sitting on driveways, abandoned though. Mind you this was 20 years ago, and Austin 1800 Utes were still spottable farming hacks out in the sticks
barrett Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 I always feel as though these look a bit like what you'd find under "70s muscle car" in a kids book full of generic car illustrations. That is a brilliantly apt description! I do like them though, 'real' muscle cars are a bit too nice for this parish, so it's great that there is a dodgy pseudo-muscle car with Leyland badges around, even if they are worth just as much as a hemi Charger
garethj Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 I always feel as though these look a bit like what you'd find under "70s muscle car" in a kids book full of generic car illustrations.I’m sure the old Playstation Driver game had something very similar to a P76. I’d love one :embarrassed smiley: :petrol coupons smiley: :fucked camshaft smiley:
Rocket88 Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 Uesless factoid number eleventy seven. Force 7 was designed so that a 55 gallon drum would fit in the boot...................allegedley
Mash Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 Leyland P76s are great, they've acheived a mythical status now I gather. I particularly like the Targa Florio version but I'm not keen on the Force 7. I've got a road test of a really early saloon on an Aussie mag somewhere; I seem to remember it was fairly complementary. Anyone else think the red saloon above looks like a Princess with a boot???
lovejoy Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 .I just love that Landcrab Ute my old man had an early Landcrab from new, down in Cornwall, MRL 845 Fand it only had 47,000 on it when he sold it for £75, never offered it to me, I think it got bangered I did see a few moving P76's in Perth in the late 70's, never got a pic of one, but they looked mean. "colc" -shouldn't that read "a 55 gallon oil drum" ??
Rocket88 Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 Thanks, Mr L, suitably ameneded [note to self, must check facts before posting........]
