GARAGE FLOORING

Has anyone any ideas for covering a concrete garage floor, have looked on the bay and most of the things for sale are interlocking rubber mats, some at daft prices, looking great in a garage about 30 foot long, with made to measure cupboards, and Ferrari parked there!!

I just need something to run the car onto and maybe stand some racking on and make the garage a bit warmer when kneeling on the floor, any ideas of things you have used welcome, I did use carpet tiles once, but they kept slipping, maybe should have screwed a few to the floor to stop them moving, also painted it with floor paint but that soon wore off and only helped to keep the dust down.

Any CHEAP solution you could suggest? As i have recently spent a fortune on the car, and am nearing bankruptcy :) Doug

If your garage is reasonably dry, a nice piece of Wilton carpet

Not too good for dealing with the oil leaks though :( I recommended something with a surface designed to show up any oil that drips out of your tat. :

We use an acreage of outrageously outmoded foam-backed '80s carpet donated by my Nan, who's more modern than it was.

Put a rubber mat under anything fluid-leakable, laying on the carpet is so much more enjoyable when you're on the job. So to speak.

Thanks guys, i was thinking carpet, my car being japanese is well oil tight, not a drip in sight, except me :) and i have a dehumidifier, so dry.

i may burgle a neighbour and steal his carpet! or beg one off someone, wish i had not got rid of the carpet tiles removed from the spare room, a few months ago, they would have done for the time being.Any other ideas welcome, floor tiles perhaps? though i don't want to slide through the back wall

Stick a wanted advert up on your local freecycle asking for a old carpet suitable for using in a workshop, I bet you'll plenty of emails.

B&Q sell carpet tiles, which can be individually replaced. They are very hard wearing, I have some in the shed.

Thanks again, tayne ,this would be too expensive, we are talking a sectional concrete garage, so no no chance of underfloor heating!! :(

Trigger, good idea will try that :)

I had carpet in such a garage years ago, it was excellent. Now my workshop is an open-ended carport, so the shelving (and shed, and car) all stands on plywood. I'm moving to somewhere with even less protection, but a big sound concrete base, so I reckon everything will just stand on bare concrete...

I think they are a bit expensive, although they are hard wearing. the ones i got rid of cost £1 each!from the old smiths DIY .

One thing that is getting me down, is my wife had the chance of some industrial carpet tiles from her office and said no!! :(

Are you a mind reader i was just discussing plywood with the wife :) trouble with concrete is the dust, and i read somewhere, it can cause rust to your underside, of your car i mean :) when what is in it and rises up, may be rubbish but who knows?

tayne, i would love to do it, if i lived in leafy south England and had an E type, Sadly, I have spent a fortune on my car recently, full rust proofing, stainless exhaust, tax and insurance, ctek, dehumidifier, painting, MOT,plus i need to spend 2 grand on my house extension repairs, so cash is a bit tight! :( Thanks for your comments by the way. I love this site for the different opinions,

Regards, Doug

Costco had some garage flooring, big packs of vinyl tile things. Can't remember how much but they weren't that expensive.

I have a heated driveway - but only when the sun is shining!

I think I may replace the bedroom carpet and put the old one down in the garage!
