New Wagon of Shite..Viva Sold.

Ms Rabia finally bit the shite bucket this evening and acquired our new workhorse..a 1990 Ford Laser /Mazda 323 stationwagon.Shes a dieseler..5spd..straight A body..cost 265squid..doggy interior complete with smell. Here in NZ theres an extra diesel tax..so if u dont keep that up..u get screwed so the guy had detached the speedo cable.I couldnt go on the purchase as i had to return Viva to base..but the thermostat has gone on it..so Nicki had to get towed 50kms home..snapping towropes with her brother..its gone to a mates home garage to get a mates rate overhaul..so Viva will still be in action for a few more days..but we re pleased with the purchase..

Looks nice'n'clean! There's a premium on diesel over there? So the guy hid a few miles?

Yeah,,and people seem to assume that the tax buck passes with the new owner..which isnt the case..theres no point putting it in yer ad cos its an "obvious' deterent..nobody had even looked at it..im gonna be a wee bit sneaky and see if we can get red diesel for it as well..occasionally...diesel hardly is cheaper so it sux for domestic cars..its a real bogan car..or chav ..Jim Beam seat covers etc..but we l soon get rid of all that..it was assembled in Auckland and they have a great reputation for reliability..

nice purchase rab, whats gonna happen to the viva

Initial idea was sell..but now im buckling to the idea of keeping it..and putting an SU carby on it..Nicki doesnt want me to modify it..but slightly lowered on widened original rims doesnt count..does it..?

S'alright Gary..New Zealand is still fertile ground for digging up Vivas..

ok..front drivers seat rooted..back seat the same..good news is that Nickis found an old boy with about 5 of these on his farm..but no wagons unfortunately so will be a slight mish to find backseat..its really quite straight for a 20 yr old car..and the ol dieseler knock knock is quite comical..and a full tank only costs just over $40..so Viva is now retired and to be sold...au revoir Pearl..but better than euthanasia...

Loving the Jim Beam seat covers Rab. They really are a local shite accessory of choice, along with comically bad oversized chromed wheels on unsuitable motors. Why do most cars here have seat covers and why are they all so terrible? There are some grey/blue scratchy efforts which are always in the sale pages of Repco and Supercheap Auto which are very Halfords circa 1989. Quite period for most motors I suppose, though. Took some grey sheepskin ones off our Commodore to be greeted by mostly intact and much cleaner original cloth seats. I suppose it's a bit like the Americans seen on films/Oprah that sit on sofas immaculate under a plastic cover - when are you saving them for?!

This morning Nickys bro called us to say he'd found a parts wagon for us..its an Aussie assembled model..which means its called a Meteor..it was offered thru his church...which seems to be a great place to score cheap or free cars..Ye Shall no Longer Besaddled With Beasts of Burden...whats cool is it has Fulma wheels with good tyres..good drivers seat and the nice roof rack...its either gonna be entirely free..or we l take the good motor out ..flog that and give the money back to the bloke..and finally we have a rotten car for the back garden so we can keep up with the neighbors..

Wagon No1 actually had 13' light truck tyres..and No2 14' ..so we went to our local tyre depo..and we swapped the truck tyres for two new 14' plus $50..all fitted.

and voila..the better lookin end result..

Hey Rab, you not tempted to swap over the natty chrome door handles to go with the chrome roofrack? Looks like the rear lights are different but yours seem to be suffering from diesel stained clusters (like mine), so that'd cheer things up a bit. Keep the 13" wheels if you can though - steel wheels rule!

WTF..i thought that was some custom tint idea..now i gettit..i think we l stick with the black handles..to much hassle..and we will keep those original rims..

I sold the Viva to Doug who works at the local Castlecliff petrol station..at a 15% profit...

So the little wagon now becomes our car-pool workhorse..im paying to help maintain and pay off its Diesel Tax...Nickis brother so far has put new alternator..wheel bearings..we ve had the radiator flushed..stereo fitted...all filters new...now we ve got a slightly loose ignition barrel..
