Angola, officially the Republic of Angola (Portuguese: República de Angola, pronounced [ÊÂɛˈpublika de ÉẪˈɡÉâ€la]; Kikongo: Repubilika ya Ngola), is a country in south-central Africa bordered by Namibia on the south, Democratic Republic of the Congo on the north, and Zambia on the east; its west coast is on the Atlantic Ocean with Luanda as its capital city. The exclave province of Cabinda has a border with the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Angola was a Portuguese overseas territory from the 16th century to 1975. After independence, Angola was the scene of an intense civil war from 1975 to 2002. The country is the second-largest petroleum and diamond producer in sub-Saharan Africa; however, its life expectancy and infant mortality rates are both among the worst ranked in the world.[3] In August 2006, a peace treaty was signed with a faction of the FLEC, a separatist guerrilla group from the Cabinda exclave in the North, which is still active.[4] About 65% of Angola's petroleum comes from that region.

Any idea what the Reliant Ant stylee pick-up (with an extra wheel) is? It's in the second black and white picture in the second post.

It's really quite amazing how nice the place looks in the photos. I wonder what it's like nowadays?

South West Africa, a former Portuguese Colony but they upped and left and just after these photos were taken it descended into a 30 odd year brutal civil war

It's a Sh*thole, like a lot of Africaaah, when I was working in South-West (now Namibia), I was only 57 clicks south of the Angola border, installing state -of -the -art electronic equipment in a training college.

(It was all blown to pieces six months later.. )

I heard stories of Ford GT40's abandoned in the shelled buildings in Luanda, the capital. Don't even consider going to look for chod there, you will be utterly depressed, and I still love " Africaah" - but what a bloody mess.......

This is why I am interested in Angola - it is categorized as an LDC (Least Developed Country) and there are lots of advantages in my industry to get their agricultural economies going again and ensuring the operations are sufficiently ethical to deal with EU. Thankfully it won't be me who takes that on - I have enough on my hands in Asia, but someone soon will have the slightly unenviable job of kick-starting the old plantations. I will add to his brief the requirement to photograph any old chod that may have been looted from the cities and dumped in the fields.

Also on my list is Central African Republic, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Guinea and a bunch of other ex-French and Portuguese colonies. I should imagine there will be the odd gem in those places too.

Yup, there certainly will be plenty of "gems' out there, but you might battle with De Beers at finding them !!

Belive it or not, Zimbabwe is a good place for gems too

Sugar is synonymous with slavery, puppet governments in Central America, Fidel Castro deciding enough was enough, corrupt mill-owning politicians etc. Someone ALWAYS has something to say about sugar, but I have yet to come across any blood-cane. As soon as we complete the work necessary to whack Fairtrade stickers on all the packets, it will be a popular target.

Or maybe it was the diamonds...

West Africa and a prosperous place as per the photos until the civil war tore it apart in the 80s. The county has been struggling to recover ever since and is still a failed state. Real shame as it is rich in natural resources and could provide well for its people had it not breen but felched by Cuban south Africans and the cia not to mention the Portuguese and various mining consortia for years.

A.sad tale

Equally as sad is Somalia, possibly worse as there's pretty much no end in sight, a stunning town in its glory days

Fascinating photos, shows that Britain had a massive export drive until the late 70's. A great find 8)
