The noises old shite makes that you recognise.

Good choice warren! I don't know how they get away with making such a noisy, 'offensive' sounding engine today.

The Saab/Scania engineers had a good look at the powerful but unreliable British AEC V8 motor and thought they could make a reliable unit out of it. A famililiar sounding story to Triumph fans!

The original MINI was mostly developed by Rover and has a Peugeot designed gearbox.

Which Mini, umm...

Is no-one on here old enough to remember the noise of a two stroke Commer, that was a real noise!

and

Two-stroke Commers and Fodens sound gorgeous. As do Detroit two-strokes.

Hey Guys,

I absolutely adore the 1st gear gearbox wine in my Datsun 120a coupe!!,so distinctive also you can always tell an automatic a series engine in the mini and Allegros with the extra clattery noise when they catch and fire up!

Also the noise of a non starting 2cv is something i can hear without seeing it lol

Just my two pennies worth lol

cheers

Ok, all the modern Fords that have TDCI on the back, Transit, Mondeo etc. Can tell one of them miles away, no idea what the engine is though in that case.

Think they're all branded Duratorq now, the 1.8TDCi-125 (1753cc, apparantly) in my Mondeo just sounds like a Fiesta/Escort/Orion/Sierra 1.8D though, it's as noisy as buggery. In fact thinking about it, the 1.8D in my old Courier Combi was quieter... my mate's 1.1 Pug 205 Zest also sounds like a Samba.

Other than those previously mentioned (I think), BMW straight-6s are all very distinctive, Leyland 501s, 510s and 680s, Volvo TD62s and TD70s (FL6/F7 respectively), Fiat FIRE engines I always remember being quite unique sounding, Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's Scania 2 and 3-series, Cummins powered Ford Cargos and Mercedes' old 3.9 diesel lump in the T2-series pre-Vario van chassis. In the past week I've also driven a 56-plate Astra 1.4 and a 52-plate Astra 1.8 coupe and both of them sounded like my Cavalier, though I don't know if thats just me starting to really miss the old thing.

Yup, was always Maxis, Minors and beetles when I was a kid. Nowadays unless it's modern lozenge shaped rubbish, I can generally have a good idea what's coming. Tranny 2.5di engines are pretty damn easy too. Love those...

Whenever I hear a slow moving 2.5DI engine I'm straight to the front window because it's inevitably a ropey old transit pickup with a back full of washing machines, old bikes and manhole covers crawling up the road 3 up with all eyes peering up driveways scouting for anything not bolted down well enough. There is a bloke round the corner with a mondeo that sounds ZACCLY like one, though. Same engine?

I can tell a ford overhead clacker from miles off, and guess with fairly good accuracy if it is in a Ka or a mk3/4/5 fiesta. Occasionally it's in a mk1/2 or a mk3/4 escort which I can pretty much guess with 100% accuracy.
