Identifying a Peugeot Engine - Update: Pics and Probs

Dear Shiters

I have been asked to service another Pugrot 306 diseasel. The owner hasn't a fucking clue what engine is in it, other than it's diesel, and it's year 2000. The Great God Autodata lists 10 diseasel engines for that car/year, consisting variously and severally of 1.8D, 1.9D and Turbo, 1.9 D and no turbo, and a 2.0 HDi. Owner cannot find the log book either. Is there any way from the VIN plate to figure out what sodding engine it has?

Thanks all.

DVLA site would give you the exact cc. Im sure a peek under the bonnet would reveal a turbo or not.

Try typing the number plate into the DVLA site or Ebay to get the engine cc, Ask him if it's a turbo or not, most likely a HDi on that year though.

It'll be a DW8 1.9D

or a DW10 2.0 HDi.

Cheers TT, it's a Northern Ireland reg number, and ours aren't on the DVLA site, sadly.

Thanks Leonard, those pics are very useful. The HDi one will be obvious, methinks!

Handily the DW8 motor has "DW8" written on it in chalk marker, that should be a giveaway.

Cheers all, DW8 it is, the owner just MMS'd me a pic (having texted me to ask how the bonnet opens first). this doesn't bode well...

Here is the offender:

It's not such a bad looking old hector when it's cleaned up:

BUT, it's running like a bag of nails.

Scenario: It was brought up to me yesterday to change the oil and have a look at the rear wiper. Wiper sorted, oil changed for 10/40 semi synth. The car was low on diseasel, the fuel light being on. I drove the car round topped up the oil, job jobbed. The girl who owns it srove it about 10 miles, car going great, she decides "I nedd to get diseasel". So she bunged in what she says was £20 of Tesco diseasel. 4 or so miles later, the car is chugging, won't rev out etc.

So far I have lobbed in £20 of BP Filling Station diseasel, and changed the fuel filter. It's going a bit better (not cutting out), idles OK and starts fairly easy, but still doesn't drive properly.

FUCK.

Is there a water drain on these bastards? I am losing the will to live.

Here's the donk, and a close up of the fuel filter.

Cheers all.

Did I not read in the paper yesterday that some Tesco diesel has been contaminated with water? Just a thought.

What paper was that AD? If that's true I'll finally know what's up, before my head explodes!

Cheers mate. This isn't the first time mind you - maybe Tesco arent too careful? Either way, it's out of my hands. I've filled the car to the neck with Superduper BP diseasel, and it seems to be gradually getting better ( I hope!) The owner works in Tesco...

Whoops. I couldn't remember if it was the National or the local rag, looks like it was the latter. Hope you get it solved anyway.

If you can find it, Wynns Dry Fuel is an additive that is supposed to absorb water out of the fuel system.

About a fiver in Halfords.
