1989 USA-spec Peugeot 505 saloon.  The bumpers, bodykit and side skirts were all part of the 1989 facelift.  The "Peugeot" script badge in the grille is not original and looks to have been added by this car's owner.  The saloon was a one-year-only model.  There was to have been a 1990 model year 505 but, with Peugeot's fortunes in America rapidly declining and sales nosediving, dealers had so many unsold 1989 models that Peugeot Motors of America didn't bother to offer a 1990 505.  When the 505 was reintroduced as a 1991 model, there was no saloon.  Only the estate was now available.  After that, a small handful of 1992-spec 505 estates were shipped from the Souchaux factory just prior to Peugeot's announcement the company were withdrawing from North America.  Throughout it's long production run, the 505 became the most popular Peugeot sold in America.

The 405, introduced in 1989, failed to reverse Peugeot's fading fortunes in America, despite receiving  good reviews by the US motoring press.  Many of Peugeot's existing US customers weren't impressed by the 405, however.  Being smaller then the 505, the 405 was perceived as being a step down.  They were waiting for the 605, due to arrive here by 1993, but it never happened.  Today, Peugeot is all but forgotten in America.
