Shite in Southend!

Hi there! New member here! :)

Here are just a few examples of the huge variety of automotive tat in Southend, where I currently reside. All of the pictures were taken during a ten minute stroll earlier today:

A real find! A Low-Line Consul atop a Leyland FG recovery truck:

The Volvo, my own piece of Swedish-Belgian tankery. Not tat in my opinion!

Next time I go for a walk, I'm going to stretch it to 20 minutes, as there is so much more really great tat in my area waiting to be photographed :D

You bastard! I was going to go and photograph the "Pub" Vogue and Consul in Ambleside Drive today! The BMC truck is one of my old spots, they're all owned by the same bloke. I've been meaning to photograph the Dutton Sierra in Woodgrange Drive for years, at least I don't have to now... :D

I agree there is loads of tat round here, there's TWO Allegro estates, derelict Spitfire a bit further up Ambleside on the other side of the road, Anglia in the Fairway...

Welcome to the forum anyway! I'm from Wakering, where do you live?

That's pretty good going for 10 minutes spotting in the UK - Southend must be like Chiang Mai in its own way!

Volvo man, eh? As of last week, an 850 is my wheels, so I might be picking your brains.

Welcome!

Was the 1725 liberated for a rebuild do you reckon, or is the Vague a donor for something else? Looks ropey but solid.

I'm hoping the former, as it although the wings and rear arches were dinked, the rest of the body was solid and the interior was in good shape. I think there's a serial tat hoarder living in the house in the background :)

It's amazing how many truly interesting cars - tat or otherwise - there are in S-O-S. The area has quite an active car scene and was dubbed 'the Los Angeles of the UK' by Street Machine about twenty years ago :)

Although the rear drivers are more my thing, I know a fair bit about the big FWD Volvos, as I have run a 1997 V70 as a daily driver for nearly two years ;)

I'm surprised we didn't bump into each other! :P

I saw the FG, Consul and Vogue on Saturday when I was going to the station, but didn't have my camera with me. I'm glad that they were still there today. I first saw the FG in May, when it was parked a few yards down the road, just past the Adult Education College. For some reason, I never thought to photograph it then...The Dutton has been in the same spot since I have lived in the area (coming up for six years). It's a pity that it's been lieft like that, as it would make a fun car for someone. Incidentally, the nearby garage (who see to my Volvoish needs and do a damn good job) owned a Jago Geep until fairly recently.

I'll have a look for the tat you mention on my next expedition. There's a fair bit on Southchurch Avenue (where I live), including a 1960s American Ford pick-up and a very derelict Herald. A few doors down from me is a motorcycle place called 'Kursaal Classics' , which attracts all kinds of cool old stuff, like a customised matt black Volvo Amazon and a similarly-coloured mid-1960s Pontiac station wagon with seriously lowered suspension :)

P.S. I saw this 1934 Austin Seven at Waitrose (another great place to spot tat, especially giffer-spec stuff from the 1980s) the other day. Looks good in the photos, but in reality it's a bit of a hound, having been stuffed with filler and brush-painted:

At least it's still in use and not gathering moss in a front garden, though! ;)

That A7 has been around Southend at least since the early 1980's, it used to be at Roots Hall market every thursday without fail. Waitrose is definitely one of the better places to spot tat, also Asda at Shoebury is quite good as well. Another place is Kirby's Car Breakers in Rochford - viewtopic.php?p=178962

My spotted thread is here - see if you recognise anything! - viewtopic.php?f=1&t=5997

I'm driving this at the moment, just in case you spot me :D

Nice Cambridge! I'll be sure to look out for it :)

Great photos in the topic links. I often see the white Vitesse and the gold 1600E pottering around town, have seen the gold Ambassador and manky red 740 estate a few times, saw the Buick Riviera last year in ASDA's car park and used to see the red Golf and green Cav in Kirbys on the road quite a bit at one point.

I've never actually been to Kirby's, as I didn't realise it was a traditional scrapyard that you could wander around in and remove parts yourself. I bet I've missed out on some nice Volvo bits over the years! I wonder if they have any 740s or 850/V70s in at the moment?

There's two Volvo estates in at the moment, sorry I don't know much about the models but there's a brown A reg one that's just come in and is virtually complete, and a white C reg one that used to belong to the yard owners until they pensioned it off and now it's sitting in a corner :)

I recommend it highly, they're a great bunch of guys and quite reasonably priced. It's the only scrapyard I know that you can actually wander round and take parts off yourself.

It's the 2nd turning on the right after Mark One Hire on Purdey's Way ;)

I think I saw the brown A-reg one (a 240 DL) parked in a side street off York Road late last week. Apart from a few scrapes, it looked fairly good. Poor thing :(

Volvos in stock or not, I think I'll have a look around the yard at some point, as it's been years since I've been in a 'proper' scrapyard. My visits to Trice's in Sandwich, Kent (the closest yard to where I grew up, and now sadly closed) as a teenager are fondly remembered.

Any chance of confirmation on the full reg of that dead dutton sierra so I can locate it on the club database sir?

I got most of it from the photo but 1st numeral is obscured.

I can pop down and get it tomorrow if you like, as it's only a five minute walk from home :)

That's probably right. I imagine the donor car was an old Escort of some sort ;)

Beaten to it by Trigg.

There's a Simca 1100 in that list of possible registrations, BTW.

Now, that's a blast from the past! I wonder how many are left in the UK?

I'll have a rub over the picture of the FG, thats exactly what I want for hauling classics to and from the shot blasters, if he ever wants to sell it, i'll buy it.

I used to frequent sarth end and there used to be a standard atlas van stood on a drive in westcliff, the road it was on ran north from the railway line hamlet court/milton rd or similar

That was on Valkyrie Road and got hauled away a couple of years ago IIRC.

Love the FG, my #1 favourite lorry of all time :)

They are one of my favourite trucks in terms of looks, along with the Thames Trader and Bedford TK ;)

When I was growing up in Kent, I distinctly remember the FG box vans that Sunblest used to use in the early 1980s and the dark blue flatbed that my local soft drinks manufacturer/supplier (Barrett of Margate) used to use for doorstep deliveries :)

The Dutton's reg is definitely OGX 856K :)

I wonder why the owner of it hasn't restored it or sold it on? After all, being based on a 1972 Escort, it's tax-exempt.

There is a wierd apathy that sets in when you own a Dutton Sierra, I had two, only got rid of the second one a couple of months ago, stood for years on my drive under a tarp.

Its a chameleon field of some sort, like its just not there. Every one else can see it but never mention it (except the mrs... who never shuts up about it)

You have to start work on one the day you aquire it or it will just slip into your peripheral vision forever...

(I have to stop watching dr who re-runs)

Thanks for confirming the reg, its not even listed on the database so another blank VIN with a reg number

It's indeed a strange state of affairs, as the house the car is parked outside is in a very good state of repair :?

So is my house ... its just the drive thats full of car parts under tarps....

Maybe he has been too busy doing the house to do the car :P

I was wondering if somebody could let me know if the Singer Vogue in Ambleside Drive as still around? It was my Grandfathers car, and spent the last 28 years in a garage before being given away, so I was amazed when i saw it had been taxed and is possibly being done up. Any info would be much appreciated!

Posted

Hi Sarah, It's nice to hear that it was your grandads old car, It's got a years tax on it now according tot he DVLA so my guess is that the engine been put back in and it's being used but I'm sure Shep can find out for you.

I've just looked on streetview, that house opposite where Shep saw the Singer looks a bit dodgy! Look at the iron gate on the front door, it's like shameless! http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&q=a ... 77,,0,7.65

Posted

It broke my heart when it went, its always been in the garage like a time capsule from 1983 (when it was last driven). I've never known it to work, so I'd be so chuffed if it was being used on a regular basis.

Posted

Hi Sarah,

I was last in the area of S-O-S where I photographed the Singer a couple of weeks ago and didn't see it anywhere. I think that it must be in a garage or on a driveway somewhere. In any case, it's good to know that it's been re-taxed.

I'll keep an eye out for it when I go and vote at the Adult Education College next week ;)

Posted

That is good to know it's been retaxed, as it was raped for its engine for a Sunbeam Alpine by someone who trades on Ebay as "Mr Seafront" and last I heard it had been weighed in at Benfleet Scrap!
