Wow, 90k in a volvo is practically ZERO!!

nice....the mechanicals on those are tough as you like - mega comfortable hard wearing interiors - the only issue you will have is the covering at the top of the door cards (well blocks of wood- this is a tank) which gets streched a bit - happens to them all. The 900 is a much better screwed together car than the 850 and IMHO is the last of the great Volvers of the indestructible type.

90k is nothing

BUT.....The one thing to look out for will be the electrical systems - these beasts go on for years and because of that can take a lot of abuse but I would clean every electrical connection you can find - if it breaks down it will almost certainly be ignition, ECU or fuel initiated.

I would carry the following spares:

complete set of spare relays - you can ususally get complete sets second hand on fleabay

flywheel Sensor

Ignition Unit

this way the AA man will be able to get you back on the road in the rare event of breakdown. Buy Volvo electrical parts - don't be tempted by cheap alternatives

90k is, like I say nothing - I had one a Sport Estate - HPT, beefed up suspension, LSD etc - egg crate grill - serious Q car - mine had 150 on the clock - I paid £800 for it - full leather interio FSH the works - did 50k in a year including 2 trips with the family to Spain and regret selling it for 3800 a year later - wonderful wonderful car - fast, reliable, huge, easy to maintian the only slight problem was the HPT and the fuel it drank!

best of luck!

Well found Max. Give it even the slightest hint of care and it could turn out to be the last car you ever have to buy! :D

last volvo i owned was an 1978 s reg 245 estate and it was a tank :D

had been looking for another for a while... he was hoping for £600 bin price... but i got it for £400

only probs with it are petrol door flap comes off..(needs a new spring)

bulb in back brake light not working (bulb supplied)

i am really pleased with it, so much so that my daily (honda civic) is going on flea bay :D

Nice one, I love these old proper Volvos. Still loads of 20+ year old ones going about, which can only be a good sign!

petrol door spring very common fault with 240/740 and 940 - weak link in a tanklike design - they get screwed because you open them, fill the car up, put the cap back in, turn around, catch your leg on the still open flap, bend it back, and the plastic retainers for the spring break (inthe 740 and the 940) or the hinges bend back (in the 240) and its amost impossible to get it to sit flat again!

i have managed to put spring back where it goes and door flap shuts just have to do it everytime i fill up..

would i get cover on classic car insurance on this car?

Posted

perhaps - you could certainly get insurance through Chaucer or one of the others - might not be 'classic' car insurance per se but you could probably get a limited mileage deal with them

LOL at broken Volvo bulb.

Max, speak to Footman James, they'll insure you on a classic policy on this, and provided your postcode isn't in an area with high premium loading, you should get it cheap because it's worth less than £1000. I insure my Amazon and 480 with them for £127 a year (although the Amazon is valued at more than £1000). It cost me £13 to add the 480 on to the policy, and sweet fanny adams extra when I renew.

Aye, I've got my Golf on a classic FJ policy just cos it's a J-plate, they pretty much go just on age.

tried to insure volvo with chaucer and fj online... both came back with "sorry we are unable to give you a quote" wtf???

end up just changing vehicle details with company i had honda insured with... only worked out £4 less than the honda did for the year

so at least it is legal otr now.

gives me until may 2011 to look around for cheaper insurance
