As a former Ibiza owner, I was going to suggest one of these in 1.9 TDI form. 8)

Playing devil's advocate here, but what's wrong with the current Astra estate that it warrants changing?

Currently used by the O/H, when/if I put the Sceptre back on the road as my daily driver her car will be the 'main' car, if that makes sense... and I find it thoroughly unpleasant to drive. Plus it had advisories for brake discs, front struts and exhaust at the last MOT...

Some love here for the Volvo V40 - a friend of t'wife bought a one-owner 99/V 2.0SE with leather, working air and 130k backed up by a full history for £995 a month or so back. Too early to tell if it will be reliable but looks tidy and no faults so far.

Otherwise why not a Mk4 Ashtray 1.6 8-valve Club?

One of these Corolla estates FTW:

Actually quite a sensible choice, with the added advantage of looking completely bonkers.

So...you don't like the mk3 Astra...if it's to do with the power steering and lack of feedback etc, you probably won't like the Polo/Cordoba estate either...

What sort of driving characteristics do you like then? Beqaring in mind here the "Scooter & Volvo 240" criteria whereby it's the car that fits you best?

Have you thought about a Scirocco with the back seat removed?

biggish space,

not thirsty

not as wanky as an Astra

but can't fit freezer/grandfather clock etc.

FIAT MAREA 1.9JTD WEEKEND, ugly as sin but my dad has had one for years now, returns 50ish mpg round town, 60ish on a run, 110 horses to play with so she shifts, loads of room for carrying crap, prices are peanuts and for a Fix It Again Tomorrow no problems whatsoever so far in 7 years :D

I've had a Volvo V40 for just over a year and it has done nearly 20000 miles without putting a foot wrong. Every time I work on it I'm pleasantly surprised that it all seems good quality.

They do have weak points though. The diesels aren't top of the class for fuel economy. The 1.8 GDI engine is good on fuel but suffers from coking issues if supermarket petrol is used. Lower suspension arms wear out - or rather the bushes do. The ride quality isn't quite as good as you'd expect. Better to be driven in than to drive.

However, I do know that when replacement time comes (hopefully in a decade when it has been twice round the clock) I'll get another Volvo :D
