You know. The green one with the orange grille.

And the bizarre red, quilted leather interior! Has anyone driven one of these? I love the 1.8, these have upgraded LSD's from the turbo 600 and the VVC. Green car, orange grille, red leather, chrome instruments and brushed steel exterior trimmings -

Surely these must be on the road to being a not that expensive rarity in 10 years?

Posted

Love to own one, however I've never driven one. Still, love to own one. Prices seem to be a little all over the place for a nice one. But seen plenty go for under a grand on eBay. Doubt they'll get much cheeper...

Surely they are already a not that expensive rarity?

Still, I'd quite like a go in one given the chance.

There was one near me not so long ago for £2595 - at a dealer, but still seemed a fairly insane price.

Do like the interior though!

My old housemates Dad had one. He loved it. Picked me up in it a few times and he liked to boot it around a bit. Never got to drive it (he wasnae daft) but was pretty impressed.

The Vi's are quicker than these, and more understated. A mate had a Vi some years ago, and there is no doubt that its a quick car, i liked it, seemed reasonably well screwed together too.

Unfortunately reliablilty was an issue as with all k-series, a headgasket replacement will be imminent.

Posted

Not as quick as a Vi as stated, which in turn isn't as quick as a MG ZR 160.

Headgasket change may not be imminent if the car has been looked after.

There's a nice looking Vi on eBay for £600 BIN. Taxed and tested, and the interior (which is nearly as nice as the BRM but not as OMG) is in good nick. 148bhp so can't be too much slower than a ZR.....

Aye, and the Vi is a lot more understated. I like the ZR, but it's a wee bit Max Power

Definitely one to squirrel away. OK it might not be spot on performance wise if you say so but the special bits more than make up for it. I've always liked them.

To all the silver grille changing philistines though - please put it back to orange, that's the whole point of the livery

Which engine does the Vi use, is it 2.0?

The car that inspired that awesomely strange grille:

It's a 1.8 K Series Station. You CAN get a 2.0 T series into the R3 shell, but it's a metric fuckload of work. I never want to do it again!

I'd roll in one. Always quite liked the strange colour combo and the fact a piss and biscuits OAP special can shift quite well.

I thought it'd be relatively easy using an R3 diesel as the base. I imagine converting a K-series car is a lot more hassle though.]

I've always quite fancied a 200Vi, very subtle car - looks to most observers like a high end 214.

Posted

Yeah, it was a K car we converted. Although the engine from the car that barret posted would be even more tricky! Gas turbine FTW.

There's still quite a lot of these being broken on the various MG/Rover forums, the interior reminds me of the Spyker they had on top gear. How about fitting the 1.8 turbo K-Series from a Rover 75?,although I don't think they're any more powerful than the ZR VVC :o

I love the orange quilted leather, that bit is mucho wantiness from me.

Unfortunately, I avoid the K series like the plague, so I wouldn't even contemplate exchanging money for one.

Shame really, as the K is an excellent motor on the rare occasions its not an expensive kettle, reasonably smooth, revvy, good on fuel and reliable. Nothing else seems to go wrong with them other than the HG.

Given the K-series' well-known troubles, how about doing as Lotus have done and replacing it with a Toyota VVTi lump, or as Caterham have done, with a Ford four-banger? Shouldn't be TOO much work (though having said that, I have a horrible feeling it'll be the worst, most enormous fuckload of work ever known to man)...

Or you could, you know, just for a change.... do the head gasket?

Yeah, but it's going to keep on giving you trouble every so often...

Not if you use the correct uprated gasket set & ladder, check the head carefully and do the job properly. I don't want to jinx myself, but I've had a load of K cars over the years, and have never needed an HG. Waterpumps can be a load of shit, though, and those sodding immobilisers....

Or if money is no object, ask Reyland to fit a 340bhp 20v Audi lump 8)

http://www.reyland.co.uk/Details.asp?ProductID=150

Shit, they could even fit it in a metro

Bloody hell... 20 valves? Is that a five-valve-per-cylinder sort of thing (a la Fezza 355), or is it a four-valve five-cylinder?

Bet it weighs a bloody ton, mind. If I were doing up a Metro or somesuch, I think I'd try and get a bike engine in... or at least as hot an A-series as I could manage.

The audi lump will be for a K series Metro, not A series. Easiest thing to do is throw in a 1.8 - like I have :D

Oh right, OK.

So what is the Audi lump? Four or five cylinders?

Posted

"Old" Audi 20v lumps are straight 5, with 4 valves per cylinder and capacities of 2.2 or 2.3 litres. Last used in the 80 and 90 models?

"New" Audi 20v lumps are the VAG 1.8 20v 4 cylinder engines, used in A3, A4, Golfs, Passats, Seats..... the whole range. Also in 1.8T guise with a turbo on.

I don't know which engine they're offering.....

edit: The piccie shows four plug leads :)
