PUG 406 UPDATE

3 mths today i brought my 98 R reg 406 2.0 petrol GLX 4dr with 144k with a few mths t+t for £350 which i previously posted up on here an to be fair it's been realiable an fun to drive in that time an i have really grown quit attached to it it.

But it gunna need some money chucking at it if im gunna keep it now an the mot is up next mth. An there are few faults with it when i brought it an sum more have developed. When i brought it had a blowing exhaust which ive had replaced, back box an middle section. Changed the oil + filter an are due a change again soon.

Thought the following need sorting.

1] Cambelt is overdue a change an got no history to show if it's ever been changed. Would have the belt with tensioner and waterpump changed too.

2] One of the tappets has totaly gone an making it sound very rattley when driving which makes it sound very oldskool french !

3] 3 Days after i brought it the drivers door lock has gave up so can't lock the drivers door. An last week the passangers door lock has packed up. It wouldn't have been so bad if the remote central locking worked but it doesn't an the buttons are missing off my key too! So can't lock the car at all.

4] My friend reckons a rear wheel bearing has gone haven't looked to see which one though had to put the spare on a week after buying it because the drivers rear tyre was bald on the inside an i found a nail stuck in it too so im guessing that could be a good clue as to which side. Haven't brought a new tyre yet so thats on the list too.

So not major disastors but will all add up to a hefty size bill i fear in total. Just unsure if i should cough up or bail out ?

Oh an nearly forgot had to have the drivers side rear sill welded up as what looked like a minor blister turn into 3 holes. So paid a local bodyshop £150 to weld and repaint the sill which they almost did right! Apart from it's doesn't match at all. They are gunna repaint it again hopefully next week although i got them to repaint the drivers mirror casing too which doesn't match ethier an to top it up off it now rattles badly at motorway speed! So i'll be adding that to the list too as it really pi**es me off, I give up with garages they can't seam to get anything right from what ive seen these days where did all the decent one's go ?

Anyway enough moaning any ideas on what i should do. Should i keep it or get rid just not sure what to do for the best. Have been looking around but everthing ive seen are overpriced sheds. So im thinkng sod it an just keep it for now an get it sorted. An where i can get a lockset from as they are rare secondhand an peugeot want a £170 for one door! Thanks.

Between the devil and the deep blue sea here I think. You seem to have chucked a few quid at it which, to be frank, doesn't look likely you will ever see back. The joys of running a car I suppose but then you have to work out what is the best bet: throw more money at it and if something major goes wrong accept you've lost the lot, or sell it and get something else starting the whole process again.

One thing I will say is it really does seem to be a buyer's market at the moment, there are stacks of sub five hundred quid cars about at the moment with decent MOT and some tax, nothing seems to be shifting that well at the moment, especially unfashionable cars or those with biggish engines.

Seeing as you bought it not knowing much about them and discovered you like it, I think I'd get a better one (there's thousands of then around, and even the good ones are cheap). You could then keep yours for a short while and nick anything off it you might need for t'other one - then scrap the old for £100. Simples!

Cheap 406 = TROUBLE. I had one a few years back and jacked it in when the gearbox went for the 2nd time. Absolute piles of poop in my (humble) opinion except for the diesels which seem to buck the trend for popping! :(

I like 406s (or 406's as you'd call them here). They do seem a bit lardy and somehow not as complete a package as the 405 though.

Wouldn't say no to a coupe, definite future cla**ic.

As others have pointed out, you could probably buy another, possibly better 406 for the price of the repairs to yours, assuming you're not doing the work yourself.

Aaah, the Coupe, a different animal with the 2.5...............definate future classic.

A 406 V6 Estate would possibly tempt me out of the Jag, but only as the Jag will be going when I move to Czech.

This sounds a bit harsh, but as has been said, its a buyers market for sub 500 (or even sub 300) motors- if you have the space you could go after another and use the one you have as a "parts" car- or weigh in and put that to your next one (£100 per tonne near me at the mo)

I love the styling of the 406 coupe, In yellow 8) I'm also got the raging horn for a Peugeot 407 Coupe 2.0 HDi Bellagio in bright red...

Sorry for a late reply to all your replies! Been ill with manflu so ive been told. :) Thanks for all the advice everbody been thinking about what to do an im gunna stick with the pug for now as it's only worth scrap money to anybody else. Though looking around yesturday i found a local garage asking £995 for an identical car to mine in only slightly better condition! An a look on autotrader i found a few between £595 - £795 so think it could be better the devil you know as they say an i can't bear to scrap a half decent [any] car as it's such a waste of a car im sure i can get the faults sorted in time without too many expensive bills. I hope.M.O.T premitting.

It's the same with my cavalier which if any sensiable person owned it they woud have given up with it long ago. It is slowly getting repaired despite it failing the mot 5mths ago on a non existent inner/ outer passanger sill and other odds an sods rather than bining it my unlucky friend is slowly fixing it up which i think he probbley regretts offering to help due to all the welding needed but when it's done i'll probbley have to sell it on at a loss because i don't really have the space or need for it any more. Maybe one day i'll learn ?

you've got to strike a careful balance burnside, if I was your mate and spent ages welding up your crusty old cavalier to help you out, then you flogged it for a nominal sum, i would give you the big FO next time you need some help! Use those favours wisely!!!

Sell the 406 because it'll always be expensive to fix, put the money towards the Cav which will always be cheap to fix.

Bung half the money you get to for the 406 to your mate and ask him if he can get a move on, offer to spend the day helping. Even if it's just changing grinding discs, getting busy with the wire brush and making the tea a job is usually quicker with two people.

Problem is, the Cav will always be shite to drive in comparison to the 406.

Herein lies the French car conundrum that has plagued these fair Isles for many a year.

Plus, if you do things the right way you shouldn't get too bummed for parts. Use GSF or Euro Car Parts, and search for Motaquip parts on eBay. They make the OEM branded parts for PSA.

Go to a main stealer and you will get slackened.
