Alexg Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 Resently I've bought my first house with the GF. After a few disagreements due to differing tastes Ive managed to persuade the other half to get some more retro styled furniture for the spare room and I've just picked up this beauty from Ebay (same as photo below but not actual one) . Original early 70s with classic dial up and bell-ring. I feel like holding to my ear with a fag and a glass of wisky pretending to be Jack Regan Even if its never used it still looks great IMO Next i'm thinking retro/shite stereo system Is there any other homeshite you fellas got/recommend that I may need to invest in?
Jack_Harpers_Teeth Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 Got one of those - same colour . Makes a great whiring noise does the dial. Bloody useless for making calls where you need to use button options - cos you aint got none, but great for smaking someone on the back of the hand with (Like what Jack Regan and Gene Hunt did).
boobydoo Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 I've got exactly the same!! I bought it cos I thought it would look appropriate in the old cottage where I live. Its a recommissioned genuine BT one in the same colour.
trigger Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 My mate has just sold one of those on ebay! (wonders if it's the same one...)
Jack_Harpers_Teeth Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 Mine had a large stainless steel screw floating about in it's "gubbins". Anyone know if this was a standard feature?
trigger Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 My dad has a old phone as a ornamant., It's a black bakelite thing with a wooden box attached to it with a handle that you can turn, Looks quite cool.
ChinaTom Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 Ah, GF is girlfriend. My warped brain read Grandfather until I re-read it more carefully and saw "other-half".
254575 Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 maybe a vinyl seated telephone table to finish it off?
AnthonyG Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 Those GPO phones are great. I'd buy a Tesco Value/Asda/Argos ordinary one for £5 and keep it in a cupboard for times when you need to use a 'touch tone' phone though. For furniture try local auctions (pref. household items ones, not antiques), the larger charity shops, and freecycle. These places are usually how the ebay sellers source their stuff - unless they did genuinely find it in the loft/get given it by their gran!
Alexg Posted August 23, 2010 Author Posted August 23, 2010 My Mrs gets freaked out by second hand stuff. We bought the house as a repo and it had a brand new sofa bed in the spareroom. I thought it was great, one less thing to buy... she was repulsed at the thought of using furniture someone else had maybe used and refused to keep it. So everything we bought is brand new. When I unrapped the phone the first thing she did was mention the handle was a bit dirty
Alexg Posted August 23, 2010 Author Posted August 23, 2010 maybe a vinyl seated telephone table to finish it off? If I bought that my Mrs will tell me to put it in the garage with my other crap
messerschmitt owner Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 worryingly, I have the red version of that phone with white covers on the handset - does that say something about us autoshiters? I love lots of 60s design and have an Arkana table and chair from the QE2 in the hall at home, and would love a G Plan sofa again!
Guest Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 We have two of those phones - cream one upstairs - brown one downstairs. Must be the Autoshitists choice. And yes we have a cheap Argos phone to swop when the need arises.

Conrad D. Conelrad Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 I used to have a bunch of those phones... down to one now, and its covered in stamps.
messerschmitt owner Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 I did have a full set of the 706 and 746 dial phones (plus trimphones), but that was too much even for me, so I have just about got rid of them all. (In fact I have four on ebay at the moment) I do still have a late one, I use, in brown with a touch-tone pad, on-off bell and light up hand-set. and would you consider selling the chair?
Louise2cv Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 Brown one here. They are just miles nicer than modern phones.
Albert Ross Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 Guess what? I ALSO have one of these phones in cream. Ex-GEC internal but converted to BT gubbins. We should make it an AS entrance qualification.
Mr Lobster Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 Personally, I'd rather see anything off topic or not really automotive related to stick to the Grumpy / Grin threads. I'm not particularly bothered by the odd off topic thread, thats fine but how far do you go with it? I for one don't want to log on and then have to spend five minutes wading through a load of O/T porridge stuff to find some car posts.
Justin Case Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 After a few disagreements due to differing tastes Ive managed to persuade the other half to get some more retro styled furniture for the spare room...........Is there any other homeshite you fellas got/recommend that I may need to invest in?Never mind the spare room, get some retro furniture for the dining room/area. Daughter has some G-plan stuff and it is beautifully made and still like new; real tree not MDF, dovetailed joints on the sideboard drawers and a superb extending mechanism for the table that was obviously designed by a real engineer with a slide rule and leather patches on the elbows of his tweed jacket It's all teak, whether solid or veneered plywood, which I suppose makes it 60s ? More ideas and a few names to look out for here:http://www.retrowow.co.uk/index.html All that should be enough to convert her Disclaimer- this may be thought off-topic by some, but shite can sometimes be more than just old SD1s and Peugeots, viz Hirst's wardrobe
Rusty Pelican Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 We have one of these in this colour, yes its a modern copy with buttons but does look the part ,
ChinaTom Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 I was thinking of posting up an obscure question about Transits, and I bet hundreds have pm'ed Fred like they did last time. TB, I think the "rules" here are governed by common sense and everyone is perfectly capable of arsing it up every now and again, but by and large all the regular contributors here are bloody decent chaps and chapesses, and most things are tolerated, forgiven if necessary and as soon as the envelope is stretched too far, subtle flags are waved and it's all ok again. The thing is TB, it IS always OK in the end, and Trigger buys an orange bundle of joy. People who genuinely just can't tolerate stuff get up and leave but I bet when they see an electric front window switch for an Ambassador VdP on Ebay described as a "unique and rare part", they'll be straight back here with a photo of a Peugeot 305 GTX central console. This is a free pastime - there is no need for a service guarantee. If you don't fully understand what is what here (does anyone?), just sit back and observe for a bit. This will be entirely 1) irrelevant2) my point entirely when Mr Bx moves house and needs to shift his collection around. There is an Argenta photo on its way to this board soon I think. Sorry, I've had a few glasses of wine this evening - WTF was this thread about? Phones? We had one like that blue one, but beige. There was an Austin Allegro 1750HL outside. Is this shite?
mattblack Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 We've got a G-plan drop leaf dining table that was given to us by my sister when we moved in here in 1992, my sister got it secondhand herself. In true autoshite style it's had a couple of re-paints... The matching chairs unfortunatly got binned as one had a broken backrest, which had been 'repaired' by my dad by screwing a metal plate to it...
Albert Ross Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 Well the title of the thread didn't mislead me. I didn't expect to find anything to do with cars..... On the same token, I opened it and found what I expected. Had I not opened it, I would have had no opinion, nor any knowledge of the content. Seems like TB, you have the double standards. Like ordering coffee and then complaining because you never got cocoa. Lighten up man. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Variety being the spice of life, sit back and enjoy the surroundings, stop looking over the driver's shoulder to see if he has both hands on the wheel. Look out of the windows and enjoy the journey. Who knows, you might learn something if you pay attention mate. And that's my opinion. You are entitled to it. I like the way you stood up for Fred. Top move in my opinion. I have no malice towards you TB.
Alexg Posted August 23, 2010 Author Posted August 23, 2010 THIS IS NOT A FIGHTING POST, because I "HEART" non-AUTO TOPICS. But.... "We" (I'm not poking at anybody specifically) basically shouted down Fred on here for posting up various dead threads due to the spambot. And some of my friends here shouted Fred and I down in the most explicit "F-Off" terms for having the temerity to post something not directly automotive. Then last night, a guy rants to the Mods to get rid the off-T "spam" (while he creates spam himself by asking for spam to be de-spammed, which is itself, spam). I would just like to point out this inconsistency. And I would like to ask: 1. Is spam tolerated here by and for everyone? Egalitarian stylee. 2. Or, is spam here tolerated only for "special people"? And how do I become a "special person" because I'd like that status. I can operate under either regime. I would just like to know WHICH regime the rules are. And, IF, the regime is that we are all equal, and equally entitled to OT posts and threads, then I think Fred ought be owed an apology. And we ought to entreat her to return. And, frankly, kiss her on any set of cheeks she wishes. Because, then, she did not a thing wrong. No one owes me an apology, however, as I don't give a damn what anyone thinks of me, especially 1's and 0's on my monitor screen. If you're shifting around uncomfortably in your chair, you are probably somebody who ought to drop Fred a PM and demand she come play to with us. Full disclosure: Yeah, she's my friend. NormHave a day off mate
Alexg Posted August 23, 2010 Author Posted August 23, 2010 Back on topic (although non-motor related) this sort of shit pops up on ebay and floats my boat. I will be getting Virgin/Sky/other and if so I fancy buying a faulty retro stereo/vcr etc ripping out the inneres and hiding the sky box inside..... ?

Me, I'd go for a Bang & Olufsen s/hand system:http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/COOL-Bang-and-Olufsen-BeoSound-Overture-/270625948632
Rusty Pelican Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 We have this , bought from the Tip years ago for £6
Formula Autos Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 Surely one of the cornerstones of any discerning shiter's interior design scheme is a lava lamp?
