G55 AMG is on my 'lozza win' list all the same.

Compared to this from the same people at 11 years newer & 3 grand cheaper! :ohttp://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250248768666That's expensive even for something with a 3 pointed star, do they attract some sort of premium due to obscurity? For instance if I wanted to splurge on something of the Benz variety, from the same vendor is this cream of the saloon crop & is made to look a bargain in comparison! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250250255488

Regie, have a squizz on Autotrader to see just how expensive G-wagens can be.

Well I waved good bye to my VW today but said hello to a substantial pile of cash. Half goes into mortgage / living costs / the bottomless pit that is the Jones family accounts. The rest is ready to go on a motor.

Today's ebay search came up with this. My spidey sense is tingling, what do you reckon?

Pic looks good, an S3 109 Safari, just like I want. Overdrive is good, free wheeling front hubs are good (I suppose) and V8 conversion I can take it or leave it. Even this sounds good....

this is an absolutely genuine 1961 Series 2A LWB

Cool

with the complete body from a 1970's Series 3 Safari.

Riiiight......

She starts instantly and drives without any known fault, but please remember no MoT

So if it drives so well, why not drive it down the road and get an MoT on it? Even if it fails on a couple of tyres and dodgy indicators it's got to be worth having a fail sheet, surely?

And it's farkin miles away. Is it always this difficult to but an old Land Rover?

Shouldn't be. All of mine have been 'pot luck' though. That one looks pretty canny, though maybe worth having a 3rd party inspect it first, better safe than sorry!Expect to be CONSTANTLY berated by bearded nerdlingers for 'non-originality' though.

See I'd have thought a Landy from 1961 would have the earlier front with the headlights in the middle next to the grille?I don't have anything against Land Rovers, they have alot of character & the bigger engined ones sound quite nice & rorty unlike the the smaller ones which chug like tractors.I have only a very basic understanding of them, for instance to my eyes there have been 3 stages to the normal Land Rover, cutting out Range Rovers, Discovery's, Freelander's & those Forward Control spin-off things.... The series 1 = the one with the headlights inside of the indented front wings, right next to the grille. The series 2 = the one where the headlights have moved onto the wings & only the grille is in the middle. Indented at the front like the previous version. The series 3 = the one that finally has a front end which is flush the whole way across & has a full length grille. Known mainly as the Defender. There's also another style but it doesn't look like any of these & it's not the Forward Control, it's always a bit smaller looking than the rest. I'm not sure where it fits into the range but I'll see if I can find a picture.... Anyway that's it in a nutshell, probably wrong but that's my basic understanding of Land Rovers. Much prefer Range Rovers myself although I do like the Series 2s like GarethJ is hankering for.I reckon it's about time a new generation / series 4 Land Rover came in as we've had the Series 3 / Defender style since the early 80s now & I'm sure it wasn't this long between the first / second & second / third rehash?!

Nice one Reg, you were wrong on pretty much every count there!:lol::lol:

I can still see why I thought what I thought. It makes much more sense but maybe that's the problem, my logic & reality don't often match  It's only really the series 1s & 2s that tripped me up, as they're broken down much more than I thought they were! I basically took it that all the ones with the central headlights were called Series 1, not spilling over into Series 2 as well, and not reckoning the ones with headlights on the wings can be series 2 AND series 3. And the series 3 aren't series 3 at all, just Defenders. Ok fine I was completely wrong Land Rover have made it much more confusing than it needed to be! Anyone would think they were Japanese! :P:lol:

Pic looks good

It does, doesn't it? I could fancy it myself if I hadn't owned one before :lol:I'll tell you why it hasn't got an MOT though, because the chassis and bulkhead are full of ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuust! It's been driven round an estate without seeing an MoT tester for three/four years, so there may well be some very big holes indeed by now. And in the extremely unlikely event that it's structurally sound the V8 will drink you out of house and home. I know logic has little to do with these things, but all the same...Good luck whatever you decide!

Just out of curiousity, what kind of top speed would you be looking at in a Land Rover with a V8??

Posted

With overdrive and the higher revving V8 I reckon you could be flirting dangerously with 72mph, you could literally blow the doors off 1200 Beetles (71mph) and 2CVs (70mph)

Course you'd be slurping the old 4 star a bit quicker and be even more deaf, but if I wanted something capable on motorways I wouldn't buy an old Land Rover

No need for a V8, lovely as they are - my 200TDi Defender can easily crack 70mph (measured on the GPS) but is much happier cruising at 65. It's comfy enough and very stable at speed, but pretty noisy. Not too bad on fuel, either - I get 28mpg overall.

Having driven a variety of Landies [including the AP version whilst defending Western civilisation against the Russian hordes in the seventies-life expectancy for your avarage squaddy if the balloon went up 11 minutes!] I'd avoid all of them like the plague, unless you want to "climb every mountain".On anything old, the rear bit of the chassis [spring hanger area] will be constructed mostly of dried sileage and cow poo, the brakes are only matched in their total inefficiency by the steering, and the engines seemed to be specifically chosen to be as gutless and fuel inefficient as possible. Even Range Rovers always seem to drive with a curious shuffling gait, like being in a railway carriage. If you want something drafty, uncomfortable, expensive to maintain, thirsty, and prone to rot, you couldn't do better...................unless you bought an Austin Champ/Gypsy.Buy an old Landcruiser/Shogun [flat screen ones especially]

Used to take the best part of 10 minutes to get the sodding Bedford RL is used to drive to start! Goverened to 50 mph, but with a bit of judicious fiddling you could get 80 out of them ahem..................
