Whenever I'm in the area I'm going to get fuel from here from now on:

When I can afford to use the Volvo (i,.e never nowadays) I find that it runs much better and gets better MPG on super unleaded compared to Morrisons pez, so there is some truth in some types of petrol giving better MPG than others. The added cost of super unleaded is negated by the better MPG, so overall it works out about the same.

Infact the Volvo always seems to have an odd misfire on supermarket stuff.

I've seen the advert for this FuelSave malarkey recently and up to 1 litre per tank doesn't seem much to shout about.

I might go back to running the 323 on V-Power though, because even though there wasn't a massive economy benefit power delivery was better, particularly from low revs, and it did seem to run more smoothly.

Pah, the one litre per tank is based on a 50 litre (ish) tank isn't it?

So with an 80 litre tank I'll be saving even more!

Hmm. That could be a gallon a week

I really don't get the whole thing about supermarket fuel being crap. It obviously isn't.

Welllll.. a good mate of mine owns a taxi company (Shameless plug Harbour Taxis, Larne, 24h, PSV owner-Drivers Wanted) and he says his Merc drivers swear blind that the cars don't go as well on Tesco diesel.

The driver of his Rover 600 diesel sees no difference. And those drivers who have Vectras don't know cos they're shit and keep breaking down.

I've noticed that round here in Newport (Wales) Shell is cheaper than Tesco as well.

Filled up with 48L of Tesco 95 tonight and got an average 41mpg out of my cheapish fill up from Morrisons in Hawick (Scotland) on Saturday which isn't too bad for a Hyundai Coupe booted down the M6/M5 at 75~80mph for 5 hours and 40 mins on a Sunday evening.

On the way up I got the very same average mpg with fuel from Shell in Newport but at much lower speeds due to that fucking traffic jam on the M5/M6 on Friday - what a fucking nightmare! Last time I drove up - due to the ridiculously low speeds I got 47.5mpg!!!

I don't subscribe to the theories that Supermarket fuels are of lower grade than any of the brand names.

I've worked with numerous people who commented on fuel all coming from the same sources irrespective of the brand name on the truck.

As long as it goes "bang" under ignition I couldn't care less really

I've found that putting Super Unleaded in my Cougar every fourth fill-up or so retains the fuel economy benefits without spending a fortune on fuel. The additives/ higher octane obviously work (the car feels better and does about 3mpg better), but you don't need to always fill up with it.

Running it on Supermarket fuel all the time does seem to make it run a bit rougher. Or maybe I'm just looking for issues on those tankfuls?

I think the only way to know for sure is with a truly independant lab test of the different fuels in a controlled environment where all the variables are identical.

There was an independant test of octane boosters and from what I remember all of them resulted in a loss in power of around 2%.

And to think some folks were paying up to £15 a bottle to brag how much faster/ more powerful their cars were (NOT) going as a result

IIRC One of the magazines used a rolling road to test optimax, ultimate and tesco 99. I can't remember the outcome exactly but they did say that Tescos 99 was the best value-for-money-wise.

I think all these fancy rocket fuels are a load of snake oil nonsense, you wont catch me buying them. A car that needs these things to run right has just not had its engine calibration finished off properly in my book!1!!!111!

Having said that if you are the sort of geeza that will buy titanium valve caps to reduce the unsprung weight of your track day Caterham, i'm sure you will be more than happy to drive to a particular pez station and pay £1.30+ a litre for them all day long.

Shell and BP have an additive added to their fuels before they're despatched, everything else is the same wherever it goes, it all just comes from the nearest refinery depot :)

I can't believe you cropped the Maestro out!

Good eye..!

+1.

Also (imho) the 'Tesco fuel is the best' theory is also something of a nonsense because they'll just buy off whoever's nearest or cheapest.
