I'VE BROUGHT A NEW CAR ! WELL NEW TO ME.

A nice buy for the money IMHO. I've driven a few of these and they seem well screwed together.

A nice buy. Early 406's were pretty cars. Amongst the last of the pretty Peugeots. I don’t think the revised ones were that bad either to be honest. I've only ever driven one example (an 'S' plate in Diablo Red). I only drove it about four miles but found it very chuckable for it's size. Excellent ride too.

It's a lot of car for £300, especially with some tax and MOT remaining. From the pictures it looks very respectable. I even like the colour too. I see I'm not the only one who likes a bit of tyre-blackening :) ! 144k on a 12/13 year old car of that size (and probably former repmobile) is bugger all, especially in diesel format. I've seen those mileages on company cars only four/five years old in our place. The stinking interior (stale fags) may take a while to clear. We had a mk3 Golf once and the previous owner was a smoker. It took months to clear. Give all the plastics a good scrub out and wipe over the seats and don't forget the headlining too. The nicotine will probably be still staining your cloths three or four scrubs down the line... Whilst the weather's nice it would be worthwhile to drop all the windows where you feel safe to do so and those new Febreze Sprays work a treat, although they're ridiculously expensive. Good old magic trees on their own won't be enough to get rid of the smell. As already stated, there are plenty of 406’s in scrapyards across the land these days, so I'll be very surprised if you have difficulty in getting most parks.

Your brother isn't far wrong with the colour regarding the old 406 touring cars. I was heavily into the BTCC at this time (before it was wrecked when the repmobiles vanished and two-bit companies replaced the manufacturers :x ) and I do remember they were mostly painted in pretty much that shade of green with a splash of gold. Here's an example.

Shame about the Cavalier. I know it looks a mess right now, but it shouldn't take too much to put it right. They're decent old barges. Many later examples come in that green (forgot the 'official' name for it now...). I remember a number of factory employees around here was razzing around in them when they were new. An uncle of mine had one (a saloon though) in that colour.

Thanks MK5 Escort for the 406 touring car pic :D an the tip's good spot of my use of the mighty 'magic tree' :) have already been doing as you adviced leaving the windows down where possible an febreze tesco's own on the seats too an has started to improve the smell. It needs sum bit's and pieces sorting so will be paying a vist to some scrap yard the end of the month when i get paid as buying this has left me broke oh well, though being meaning to say tonight that the 406 has developed a fault already!

Though to be fair this had signs of impending failure when i brought it the drivers door lock has packed up. Was having trouble catching when the key was turned but today at work it just kept turning so having to lock it from the passanger side at the moment. :(

Phoned around got a choice of a new one from peugeot supplied £80 or as this has a chipped key just replace the drivers lock with a secondhand item an have odd keys cause it wouldn't work on the ignition key unless i have it recoded to match what do you all think ?

The cavalier is pretty common in this colour on later models like mine actually a shade of blue but it is green in my view. It's called nautilus blue. It get fixed, just gunna be a while though as my friend is doing it in his spare time an hasn't tackled this level of welding before. I couldn't believe how bad the rot has set in. Has rusted from the inside out so by the time i knew about it, it was too late. Got plenty to do elsewhere to get a mot.

1.Front discs an pads.

2.Passanger front light aim.

3.Leaking powerstreering hose which is no longer avalible from vauxhall.

4.Leaking rear fuel line. Didn't fail the mot let go a few weeks back.

5. Fuel securing clips need replacing as cable ties were deamed unsafe though passed like it last year. This was done by me after someone broke the clips off trying to nick fuel out my car while visting a scrap yard about 18 mths ago!

6. Emissions too high not sure how im gunna solve that one yet.

If you can get a proper new key cut, i.e. by Peugeot from a number, you should be able to coax a bit more life out of the driver's door lock.

Thank's for the tip as it's a chipped key though im looking at £70 from peugeot. :( The car only came with 1 key so might be a good idea to get a spare when i have the cash anyway. An the button's are both missing off the key too.

Less than a week into my ownership both front sidelights packed up. Thankfully new bulbs fixed that. Then the passanger washerjet packed up yesturday. Cleaned it out with an airline an it worked fine. Today it woudn't work again which pi**ed me right off on the way to work. Driver' side work's perfect. Any ideas ?

Otherwise im enjoying driving this car though the knackard exhaust is killing the mpg. Hopefully get this tempory patched up the weekend til payday next month. An im gunna try an change the oil an filter too. My brother work's at a motor factors an got it on his account so i'll payback what i owe him when im paid too. Cost me £26.79 inc vat for mobil 10 w40 oil with a filter an engine flush. Not bad.

The problem with the emissions might be the oxygen sensor if you're lucky, but it's most likely to be a failed cat. Depends how far off they are really.

Thanks though the car did have to have a wanky aftermarket cat fitted last year after the front pipe snapped an buggered up the cat with it. So don't know if that could b part of the problem?, as ive been told that aftermarket cat's are rubbish an they can cause problems with the emissions. Stll managed to ruin the yoof's at ATS day in tamworth by asking for the old cat back! Got £32 from the local scrap dealer. Result. :)

Is the screen wash reservoir easy to get to? Might be worth taking it out and giving it a good clean out. Bits of shit could have got in there or there may be congealed screen wash at the bottom which will keep clogging it up.

Nice buy! My mate had an X-reg 1.8LX a couple of years back... bought it at 36k, sold it at well over 100k and in that time it needed a clutch and a brake light switch (which we both still show the scars for!). Cracking machines!
