Hey! I like Daewoos! Was appalled by the whole Korean Chevy thing though.

 

My Matiz (first gen) was ace. Did 18,000 foot-to-the-floor miles in it. I really REALLY like the styling of them. Then they facelifted them and I started to go off them. Then they became Chevrolets. Oh well.

Amazing what counts for news nowadays, it was only a memo to dealers reminding them to use the actual brand name of "Chevrolet", probably because the nickname of "Chevy" is seen as a bit downmarket and plebby and they'd like to keep it to a minimum at the stage where people are considering buying a car.

 

Think about it, do you think a BMW dealer showing some old money around a 760Li would do the brand any favours if he kept calling it a "Beemer"?

To emphasise the "US car execs are thick" scenario, if you read further down the memo it says that successful brands are known by their full names rather than nicknames. It cites Apple and Coke as examples. Completely missing the point that Coke is not the brand name doh!

And Apple is a trademark used by Apple Computer Corporation. So both their examples are companies shortening their own names
