WTF is a Land Rover Ranchera?

That's on ebay now, but it's down as a none runner. Sent em a pic of it anyway. Have till July to get it running! Oh and paint it blue.....

Surely a Lada Niva is the answer to your prayers??

Indeed, but finding a running none rusty blue one might take a while. There's on on ebay, it's been so messed with it's not worth considering.

just get any old shitty land rover and slap a 'ranchero' label on it, use MS Comic Sans for the font as well. Then let them prove you've got the wrong mota.

Ranchera means estate. Not a particularly common word as traditionally the Spanish don't buy many estates. They are perceived as being too utilitarian. If it a poor Spanish farmer and family then I would say a Citreon Berlingo is probably about right. If they had money then they'll have a big saloon car to impress the neighbours. My father in law (Spanish) bought an Audi 100 about 15 years ago and that would have been one of the best cars in town.I also drove my 1996 Passat Estate in Spain and despite being the top selling estate in Europe at the time, they had never seen one before.

it's also the only country in Europe I've been to where they like small saloon cars, like VW Derbys, Jettas and Ventos.A typical Megane over there one be a three box saloon whereas here it would be the hatchback.

just re-read the original postI'll bet that what they mean is a 12 seater LWB LandRover

How about an 89 Shogun??

That makes sense now, all of the ebay listings for the disco call them estate (from the DVLA description. Could they be looking for 2 discos? Can't get through to the set des, but she did send me a character breakdown. The couple live in Hampstead (proper Chelsea tractor country!) and the wife's 4X4 was bought new in the 80s, they kept that and the husband bought a disco new later. Both cars are to be their current age, that is they are not new and it's not a period piece.

I would agree with dieselnutjob, I reckon they want a 1980s Land Rover Station Wagon - perhaps one of the early 110s with the 80s style graphics on the side, or just a ordinary series III. They have an interesting take on 'retro', if they think a Matra Rancho is too modern looking for the 1980s!

yeah I know! They do want a disco, but a green one. The other car has to be blue, but no idea what. Also I am wondering about the practicalities of the SJ, given how little they are. Get 2 actors and some techs in it and I bet it wouldn't move, let alone be very matey in the back! I looked up the SJ I am interested in on the DVLA website. It's currently on a SORN, but no tax price is showing. I know this is the case if it's some kind of exemption (free tax) but how? It sure as hell ain't no ambulance, and too new to be historical. Could it be Disables Tax class?

Posted

It's most likely disabled tax class as you say.

Great. So I would have to sit in the DVLA to get some rent on it. How much is 970cc a year anyway? Never had anything that small!

I would think that it's gonna be really difficult to find an early Disco thats in good enough condition to pretend it's new...the buggers rust like feck from what I have seen

Posted

No, the car will act it's age, the character's had it from new. So if it's an M reg it will be 15 years old. So not hard to pull off!

Posted

ah sorry...me stoopid

Posted

No, they want a disco and something smaller for the wife. Like a disco is really huge....

Suzuki SJ is your best bet, these were very popular with middle class women in the 1980s

What about a Daihatsu Sportrek?, They are about from 1988-98ish and was quite popular with the ladies.

Looks like the Diahatsu (of the right vintage) is as rare as the suzi!

Surely what you want is one of these Range Rover prototypes.
