'Jeep-shaped'  Toyota 'New Year's postcard commemorative ambulances' lined up in front of the head office of the Japanese Red Cross Society in Tokyo. They were financed by a donation of one yen when buying New Year's postcards, and are about to depart on a tour of the country, finishing at Hiroshima.

Fire fighting equipment at the training ground. We have an AP-2 (130)-148 powder dispensing apparatus on a ZIL-130 chassis, a fire officers control car, an ASH-5(452)-79B conversion of the well known UAZ-452 and a regular AC-130 (130)-63B fire tender on another ZIL-130 chassis. Latvian SSR, 1984.

More detail.

This particular XJ40 saloon is a pre-production model built in February 1986. The car was originally Jaguar's Police demonstrator and is a rare manual gearbox model. However, it was then loaned to the Donington Park Race Circuit for use as a high-speed fire tender, and is fitted with a TWR body kit, XJR suspension and Speedline alloy wheels, while rear seat was removed to accommodate fire-fighting equipment. The car was later used for similar duties at the Jurby Race Track in the Isle of Man, before returning to the JD.

Powered by a four cylinder petrol engine of 948cc, it had a top speed of 52 mph and a 0 to 30 time of 15 seconds, payload 12 cwt, four speed gearbox. Later models had the option of a detuned version of the 2 litre Triumph TR 3 engine or a  diesel engine, a pick-up was also available.

Blimey. That's no 'Ambulance' with the size of the thing it's mobile A&E Department!

Wouldn't fancy trying to thread that through traffic.

Only went for £2400. Hopefully it survives, the concern is when it goes for pennies like that it ends up with some halfwit sat in a garden until it’s no good at all.

Seem to recall in Practical Classics there was one like that in Rust in Peace about that same time.

Re: HKK,

I've got an old Meresborough Books bus book about the history of stage carriage services in Kent.

One of this batch- or a very similar unit- appears in the ownership of a small Independent Operator. I shall find the book and search for a picture!

This SEAT 1430 was part of 'Operación Retorno' (Operation Return) and was used to patrol motorways and attend incidents, accidents etc.
