Vauxhall Frontera

It was one of the few vehicles I've ever driven with zero redeeming features other than it sort of looked ok. Thing is, I wanted to like it but just couldn't. It had a shite ride, no power, no handling and a shite interior. How anyone could consider one of those to be anything other than dire is beyond me.

It's in the top 5 least enjoyable cars I've ever driven.

Isn't that true of most Vauxhalls?

Yeah, they're ALL crap

They aren't crap, just a bit miserable to drive!

I didn't think it was actually possible to hate any car on this site. Seems I was wrong.

I've driven a couple of Fronteras - a 2.0i Sport, a 2.4 LWB and a 2.2DTi (the very last one built!) and found all to be ok - not a lot more. The DTi was quite pleasant but the ride on Fenland roads was absolutely horrific. Great on motorways, but that seems a bit wrong.

The Pajero Exceed 2.8TD I had was a million times nicer as a daily driver than the Frontero Sports I ran. However the Fronteras are bloody good value for money and a good laugh to drive off road and not that bad on it.

Indeed. They get a really bad press sometimes, undeservedly so. Poorly maintained examples really are poor, but generally not that bad. Having worked for Col...Mitsubishi from 1986 to 1991 and 93 - 94 I would agree that the (earlier) Shogun rode far better, but then the Fronterror was re-hashed technology when it came out...

Anyways, having blown the tyres up, refilled oil, checked water and adjusted the steering box, I can safely say it drives, well, like a 100,000 mile plus Fronty that has been reasonably maintained.

Vague, wallowy and underpowered. Seems like Shite to me.

I use to know a couple of Manta bosa who had chopped up 2.4 LWBs for the bigger CIH engine. They were shocked at how rusty they could get, and these were Manta guys ie; roof-skin-swap-all-in-a-days-work kinda guys.

I loved my mk2 Cav 1.6L great bit of kit for the money. I also had a 16v GTE which was feckin horrid crap. try getting it to beat a 2cv off the lights without making yourself look like a proper twat in your own tyre smoke was impossible. After it was stolen and then recovered minus its wheels in Cardiff it lasted 1/2 a day before someone torched it. I had an 8v GTE and that was quite nice. I drove a 3litre senator for a week and that was fantastic - could pass anything on the road except a petrol station.

I always wanted a Frontera for its tonka looks - until I drove my friends SWB and the dream was destroyed in an instant

There's a Frontera Sport for sale near me for £550. Has test and seems in quite good condition apart from a dent in the offiside front wing. I cant see the front very well from where it's parked though so cant tell if there's other damage..

Thanks for the tipoff Gompo but its not needed. Just gone and bought a 2.0i Sport for £300.

The chassis on the Sport seems remarkably robust. The only problems I encountered were the leading edge of the bonnet rusting and the petrol tank pump 'thing' fucking up (cheap shit plastic) and thus spewing fuel out.

Hand on heart as regards rust I never saw a Discovery of the same age (and a few newer) that was less rusty.
