Rejoice, rejoice! My dad bought a used 1983 MG Maestro 1600 in the late 1980s. R-series engine & twin carbs I believe. He said it was a good car. I managed to snap off the passenger door handle one day. Funnily enough, we were just leaving a Unipart outlet at the time.

I've been sifting through a lot of 80s car mags just lately and I have a few from 83 with features about the Maestro. Generally they were pretty favourable about the car. I also used to think the Maestro was a bit outdated looking, after all it was a couple of years late, but now I look at it a bit differently and it's not that far removed from a lot of its contemporaries. There were quite a few up the minute features like the colour coded bumpers, clear indicators, new headlamp types, engine management, nice modern looking switchgear and the styling was fairly distinctive. I wouldn't mind rolling in that one the Doctor has on eBay at the moment.
