Olga-From the Russian mountains

Carbs back on Olga, new throttle cables attached. Airbox hoses sorted. I took the tank off and had a peek inside, it honestly doesn't look too bad but I'll get some of the rust killer I got for my GT and give it a treatment. I put the new spark plugs in and made up some fuel line. I haven't bought the battery yet as I wanted to make sure she will fire before chucking another £50 at her. I rigged up a remote fuel supply and connected my spare (too small) battery and jump pack to her. After a few turns she tried to cough into life but then my jump pack died. I'll order the battery soon and try again. I think I'm winning!

Battery must have landed by now lol.

Yes it has. Been dealing with a family bereavement this week, making plans to go back to Hong Kong for the funeral.

I have put the battery on now all the lights work. Neutral, main beam, indicator and battery light. However the starter motor just clicks. Giving it a gentle tap with a hammer results in a slight stutter then back to clicking. I am  going with the starter is a bit gummed up from standing, it did turn over very slowly when I first got Olga with a jump pack. I'll whip the starter off when I come back from Hong Kong and see what's what.

Sorry to hear about the bereavement mate.  Fingers crossed for a handy bit of positivity for you via Olga.

Thank you Ken.

Two of the bikes I have make me feel good. My GT 185 and Olga. I may be weird but I could look at both and just study the lines and shapes, each are beautiful in their own way. The GT sounds amazing too and I love the power delivery of a 2 stroke. I can't wait to hear Olga's rumble. I'm sure riding them will be like chalk and cheese.

Check out the ads in HK as China made versions of Olga, may find some parts...

I'd be very careful, the Chinese bike is a Chang Jiang. It was based on an earlier version of the Dnepr, the IMZ M72, not the the Ural . Incidently 'M72' was a designation also used by KMZ for the Ural, I think M72 is more of a generic military classification for motorbikes rather than a  specific model name. As discussed above there is little interchangeability between Ural and Dnepr. A Chang Jiang will have evolved well away from the Dnepr by now and, I suspect, won't have anything in common with a Ural.

IMZ M72. I spy many differences.

Believe it or not you can still buy a brand new Chang Jiang in the UK - http://www.f2motorcycles.ltd.uk/chang_jiang_dynasty.html

There was an epic thread on here about the trials and tribulations of Chang Jiang ownership -

Thanks for the thread link.

Yes the chang Jiang now uses a parallel water cooled twin engine now I believe, sourced from CF motor??

Sorry for the delay in updates. I have taken the starter motor off Olga now, really easy I think it's been off before. The spline at the end spins really easily so I think that possibly the contacts or brushes are a bit gummed up/ corroded? I plan to find some old battery leads and connect it directly to the battery to see if it sound up before taking the case apart and having a look. If I can find a replacement they are about £145 so that's out of the question. Because it's a car style starter motor I have found a place in Bristol that could possibly rebuild it for less. Kick starting her is very hard work for a man of my age! So I would like a bit of help. I have tried kick starting her and she almost fired up but by then my legs had given up.

How goes it with progress on Olga?

Slowly Ken!

Managed to test the starter. The solenoid is springing but not throwing the starter to engage, so it's a strip down and possible rebuild. I hope it's just dirty and gummed up after sitting for so long.I managed to snap the clutch cable 🙄 so have ordered one from Ukraine 🤞the weather is getting better??? So I'll start cracking on with it. I'm having a clear out of the fleet this year but Olga will be staying

I would imagine a good place to start, and cheap….. I think there is a good probability it is gunked up. Boo re: clutch cable.

Oh, what’s on the departure list?

Possibly a 1976 Suzuki GT 185. A 1998 Suzuki GS125 and maybe a very cheap Chinese 125 scooter.

How goes the lovely Olga? Any updates Andy?

Unfortunately work is getting in the way. I have now taken the starter motor apart, it's pretty gunked up. When I get a spare few hours I'll clean it up. I'm also going to try easy start and try to kick start her into life. With the few dry days we have had I wish she was on the road. I will try to do better going forward, but work is building up for the summer now and Easter is next week so it's going to be mad next weekend.

😔😔☹️☹️ sad news with Olga. It's my own fault, I have neglected her whilst some unexpected and really not wanted family stuff has been happening. Firstly the starter motor looks like it's not repairable, I finally got a good look at it and it's a bit rusty inside. That's ok I thought a bit of easy start should get her trying to start with the Kickstarter. Nope....... It appears that she is seized😔😔 the Kickstarter won't budge one bit. She's too heavy to push and try to free her that way. I have put some oil down the bores and will wait until next weekend but I'm not hopeful. What with things ongoing at home, I don't need extra hassle right now, she is going to be relegated to the very back of the queue. I need to sort my GT185 out for sale as I need to help my wife renew her visa in July and other stuff is just making me lose interest in a lot of things right now. Sorry folks.
