Not to detract from the top-notch, allround win of a freebie porker that all the elitiest cocks hate, but honestly, I bet that thing stinks. People with dogs have stinky cars. And that's been sat in a barm since forevers, probably with the odd cow knocking about.....Anyway, wash it with fabreeze and it'll be awesome!

I gave the faux Porka a quick scrub up externally yesterday. What a pain! The amount of crud that I washed away from the upper bodywork and under the wheelarches meant I had to literally shovel it off the driveway afterwards. The bodywork does indeed look 767% better for it but its very flat and no doubt will respond well to a bit of cutting back and polish, prefrably with a polishing mop (which I dont have). Very satisfying all the same, a bit like popping bubblewrap or something. Ill have a go at the interior today. While mooching around the interior I found myself feeing quite ill. The layers of dust floating about, plus the mould on the seats played havoc with my hayfever. It really is horrible! Again, it should scrub up OK with a bit of effort. The previous owner was/is a Doctor and I found one of those funny silver reflective blanket things, a hi-viz vest with DOCTOR on the back of it and a lipstick. The temptaion to abuse these items is a bit too much so ill arrange for them to be returned to their rightful owners. Well, I may keep the lippy.

Big news. I found a good used battery and stuck it on... just to see what would happen. All the dash lights came on with the key... would it start? No, but it turns over very well. Clutch is OK too. The poppy-uppy headlights worked after a bit of encouragement too. Initially the N/S headlight got stuck half way but it soon freed off. I was so excited! I popped the headlights up and down continuously until the battery went flat..... electic windows and horn work too.

I'd love to clean this up. Again, pre-galvanisation, so look out for rust underneath! These are really nice handling cars.

Apparently this IS galvanised, atleast the owner told me so. If its not Galv its doing a very good impression of one. You can even see some bits where the white paint has flaked off. It really is grot free! (Hope I dont end up eating those words later on!)

That is a good looking free car.Has the chap got any more hidden away ?

Yes, a 90% restored S1 landy, although its his son-in-laws and he wants a bit too much for it. Hes trying to get rid of it though as he needs the space.

Cor, I'd love a soapy afternoon with that - keep it!

I reckon that will clean up a treat. T-Cut and polishing mop at the ready I presume?

I really think I will keep it! I came home from work this morning and despite having one flat tyre (corroded rim) and generally looking quite sorry for itself it still bought a big grin to my face.... well.. its still a Porsche.

Pics to be added later on today.

If the interior is that bad I would be tempted to remove the seats and carpet and get a rug doctor on them. Thats going to get them spotless and hopefully deodourised, especially as the nice weathers on its way so you can get the seats out in the driveway/garden to air them out. I'd even be tempted to pull out the doorcards and rear trim if it isnt too tricky (and Porsche dont charge £5 per clip or something stupid like that) as there is bound to be damp behind them. But what an awesome project!

Hey Tim, feel free to borrow my interior valeting K'archer thing if you need to. I've got some interior cleaner stuff too. Failing that bring the interior up here and we can do it at mine one day if wanted.Regarding the corroded wheel, any half decent tyre place will sort that. We used to strip the tyres off, put the wheel on the balancing maching then hold a wire brush against the rims as they spun round. Bit of bead sealer painted on, re-fit tyres, over inflate (about 55psi from memory) then slowly deflate to correct pressure. It works for a while if the wheels aren't too bad and regualr use of the car helped.

Hey, Cavette, R.E borrowing the cleaning machine- that would be great! Ill pop up sometime. Ill disguise the visit as a day trip to Chester as to keep the wife happy. I think we have a load of VAX cleaning solution knocking about here if thats compatable.Hey, Mr B, R.E borrowing the mop- that would be great! If you do choose to drop in tonight you could retrieve the A too. Its not in the way or anything, but the temptation of tat recovery is always there with an A in the boot of the car.Does machine mart sell the compound too?

Oh yeah, X reg is 81! I forgot, and I have an X reg as well. It's post 80 that they go this treatment. They still do rust in certain areas though. Looking forward to seeing the cleaned up version!

I'm dead chuffed for you, especially since you had doubts that the car even existed when you were first told about it. Likewise, Station, I'm proper looking forward to seeing what she's scrubbed up like!

Posted

Yeah no worries Tim, let me know when you're in the area matey. I think you can run pretty much whatever you like through it tbh, though probably best to test it some subtle first.

Nice work Tim, would like to see some pics of it all tidied up. I love scrubbing up neglected old motors.

Finally took some "after" pics today and took advantage of the nice weather by giving the interior a damn good hoover and flashwipe out. I discovered that the roof panel simply unclips and can be removed, which is GR9 for letting air circulate around the stale interior.

The footwells were full of gravel, mud and dust. What is it with Doctors? Teachers are the same. They will happily spend mega coin on servicing and mechanical items but will never take time out to get the inside hoovered out. I had a Volvo that was just the same- it really came up well with a bit of work though.

I also took the leaky rim down to the local tyrefitters to get re-sealed. Price for resealing an alloy (including new valve and balance) plus removing a tyre from a spare maxi wheel? £20. Bit of a con I thought, but I guess I cant complain, giving the overall cost of the project.

Mr B popped in today and very kindly lent me his polishing mop. I very much appreciate this and cant wait to get to work with it! Great crab, BTW.

Anyway. heres some pics. Ive finally got the camera in the right mode so they look a fair bit less fuzzy!

The piles of crud by the front wings are what I managed to poke out with a screwdriver earlier on. Theres a mega crap-trap behind the front wheels and they were jam packed with silt. Nice and clear now.. and guess what? No rust! Some of the underseal had curled up and fallen off mind.

Hey, Silver Cross infant carrier! Bloody marvellous! And GR8 for making into bogey/soap box cart etc when the little'un's grown out of it.

Can`t help but get the feeling you`ve won the raffle with that one, it just seems to really sit properly, cobwebs or not. Very rewarding car to drive, incidentally, you know you`re in something fancy when the handbrake is on the other side. I had a mint A-reg one on the pitch briefly, didn`t dare drive it too much as it was the fanciest thing on there by a good stretch, but it was a proper sports car experience, all this pretend Porsche stuff is a fallacy, I`ve got a really old book about the development of the 924 and while they obviously couldn`t lavish it with all the hi-falutin tech of the 928 for the price it was selling for the basic principles were every bit as proper as anything they ever made.

Just had a quick play about with this. Stuck some fresh petrol in the tank, turned it over.. nothing. Disconnected the inlet trunking and stuck some petrol down there. It started and ran until it used the petrol up and then stopped. It deffo needs an exhaust, which is slightly dissapointing seeing as it looks new (well, 11 years new)I tried a can of EASY START and found the easiest way of administering it was to pull off the advance/retart vac pipe at the dizzy end and squirt the can down it, meaning the spray went directly into the inlet manifold. I had to get Mrs Lankytim to sit in the Porka, floor the throttle and turn the key at the same time.Nothing. I "gave it some beans" on the EASY START and the inevitable happened. B A N G!. The flash of flames from the loose inlet trunking singed my eyebrows and I was deaf for a few minutes afterwards. No damage but there were some rather bermused passers by and the Wife wasnt terribly happy. Oh well. Good job the neighbours were out.I remember blowing a Citroen C15 vans air filter to pieces doing this. I always seem to blow stuff up when I have a can of E-Z start to hand...

My old Manta blew it's inlet trunk off a while ago, probably after I changed the filter and left it loose or something. Anyway, lol boomz etc.Oh and I'm eyeing up a local 924 too!

I know, Ive seen you on the 924 forum!

Sounds like a knackered fuel pump or DME relay (if the 924's have them?) - I think I have a spare fuel pump from my old 944 if they are the same, you are more than welcome to have that if you need it.

Posted

Thats very kind GGS, I think ill take you up on that offer. The fuel pump looks very crusty and it probably well past its prime. Ive googled DME relays and it does seem the 924 has one. I certainly cant hear any relays clicking when I turn the ignition on.I forgot to mention, I disconnected one of the high pressure fuel pipes from the fuel distributor and nothing came out when the engine was turned over. Infact it was totally dry. Deffo seems to be a fuel related problem.

Humm, 924 + Perkins Prima from that Montego dizzla=??

I bit the bullet today and gave the brake pedal a good hard shove. Cars that have been stood for yonks seem to either have brakes where the pedal goes to the floor because the seals have failed or a pipe has rotted out, a pedal thats completely solid or brakes that wont release, meaning the car gets rooted to the spot until you take all the wheels off and hammer the brakes free. The last scenario is why I was reluctant to try the brakes out. I guess I had to try them eventually though.Result, the brakes seem to work quite well. They come on fine and do seem to release pretty well although one of them seems to be binding a little. I can still push the Porka in an out of the garage ok though. Hopefully with a bit of use they will free up completely. I hope they are MOT worthy!

Hey Tim, for some inexplicable reason I have a full size alloy for one of these, with its top cap.I wouldn't want many quids for it if it's any good to you, although I don't think you're anywhere near me at the moment.....

Posted

I could be interested, I already have a full complement of alloys but I spose I could use another incase one drops off and rolls away on the way to the MOT center. Needs to be cheap though, as im a stingy bastard.I may have some Volvo swappable crap you may be interested in. Ill have to have a dig.Im in my living room at home, where are you?
